Vasquez now utilizes her b-school skills to manage nonprofit ElevateMeD, a multifaceted scholarship program. As head primary care doctor for the Los Angeles Dodgers, she’s watching firsthand how the COVID-19 pandemic has affected the world of professional sports. . Not long ago, Dr. Marissa Vasquez (’18) had reached the pinnacle of her profession. The Temple University Medical School graduate served as lead physician for the 2015 Special Olympics World Summer Games, held on the campus of UCLA, and was the division chief for sports medicine and fellowship program director at Kaiser Permanente. . But feeling that something was missing in her educational trajectory, Vasquez decided to enroll in UCLA Anderson’s Executive MBA program, and her decision to go back to school soon paid off. In March 2020, she started a new job as the primary care head team physician for the Los Angeles Dodgers, becoming one of the first women to hold the position in Major League Baseball and the first woman of color; she is the Dodgers’ first female lead physician. She wears many hats, and a Dodgers cap is only one of them. Black History Month has begun! The Black Business Students Association (BBSA)in collaboration with several other groups at Andersonhas been hard at work putti...ng several virtual experiences together under the theme Beyond Barriers. The goal is to highlight and foster the black community’s innovation, resilience, and brilliance in pushing beyond the hurdles too often faced. Accordingly, Anderson will play virtual host to a range of black leaders who exemplify the effective leadership being taught in our classrooms. We hope this programming will inspire all members of our community to break out beyond their own barriers, and to lower them for others. Please find featured events in the attached flyer, as well as on Campus Groups, where you can find dates and times for many more events happening during the month. We hope that you will join Anderson, BBSA and our office of Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion in supporting the wonderful celebratory events coming our way. Each one promises to be valuable, allowing us to consider how we may honor, support, and complement the great investments Black students, alumni, faculty, and staff have made to our culture of shared success.
