CARD, Autism Live and We Rock the Spectrum Kid’s Gym partnered this holiday season again to host a special drive-thru event for children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Participating families drove by as kids waved at Santa and received toys and other gifts from special elves. To view Autism Live's 2020 Toy and Gift Guide, visit http://www.autism-live.com/ToyGuide. We want to thank all the families who participated in this event and look forward to meeting more families next year!
In November, StarStart Bakery in Wenzhou, China launched a job training program for #autistic adults. The free, multi-session program inspired by Hu’s twin sons, both born with #autism and now 20-years-old teaches people with autism to make pastries and drinks in a working bakery chain. Owner Wenzhong Hu says people participating in the program gain greater self-worth and opportunities for work.
A Jacksonville boy with #autism is now a published author. Trey Sheppard, 13, cowrote a children’s book with his mother, Natalie Sheppard, during the pandemic. The book, called The Day My World Changed, is helping children across the country cope with the COVID-19 pandemic.
Students Emily Carroll, Gabriel DaSilva, Lexie Carrier and John Wagner were enrolled in a dynamics of machinery class this semester requiring a much-anticipated project that could have a big impact on a family in need. Once the students found out about Aiden’s need for a sensory swing, they went right to work. The Early Intervention and Mechanical Engineering Project at Tennessee Tech University is a program created to provide innovative engineered products to children with special needs while also offering real-world design experience to engineering students.
When San Francisco's de Young Museum put out an open call last summer for artworks by Bay Area artists for a special exhibition, it got nearly 11,000 submissions, which a jury then whittled down to just under 800 -- not knowing who the artists were behind the works. It came as a surprise when it was revealed one of the pieces chosen -- an abstract blue painting with layered colored squares was somewhat symbolic of the colorfully layered artist behind it -- a severely #autistic San Mateo teenager named James Lee de Guzman aka "Jamesey."
Several schools have slowly transitioned back to in-person learning. While this may be a step into normalcy, it may not feel that way for all students, especially children with #autism.

#Autistic individuals and support organizations and police departments are working together to foster a deeper understanding of #autism spectrum disorders among public safety and law enforcement personnel.
Many children with #autism haven’t been able to attend in-person therapy sessions because of the pandemic or because they simply can’t afford it. Four high school students have a plan to help. Senior Priyanka Senthil from Nevada and three other students from the Bay Area have created the AUesome Kit for kids with autism.
The band has been releasing songs all covers of classic pop songs onto online streaming platforms like Spotify throughout October, Canada's #AutismAwarenessMonth. They've also dropped merchandise, designed by 21-year-old Adam Barkworth from the U.K., who is also on the spectrum. Meanwhile, they also invited people on the spectrum from around the world to film themselves listening and playing along to their cover of Sonny and Cher's "I Got You Babe." The resulting video includes submissions from 11 countries.

Many people have been less social lately, spending more time at home during the COVID-19 pandemic. It can feel isolating, but with creativity there are ways to stay connected. Autism Services of Saskatoon has created a Minecraft group to help children on the #autism spectrum improve social skills. The program was originally created by Australian psychologist Raelene Dundon.
