If you weren't already aware, Catalina Island is in Los Angeles County. Because of that, we are going to be closed until at least December 20th according to the latest Covid-19 directive. Please use this time to reflect on the good things in life, and be safe when you venture out on necessary errands, mask up and keep washing your hands! Hopefully we'll see you sooner than later for kayak adventures on Catalina's clean, clear seas! Give us a call before you travel, just to be sure... we'll be waiting for you.

The ultimate social distancing activity for a family get-away is PRIMITIVE CAMPING on one of Catalina Island's boat-in only sites. We have tons of information on our website which will help you to plan your getaway. We can deliver our kayaks to Two Harbors so that you may paddle and camp the "downhill" direction back to us in Avalon. We can even deliver you to your campsite on our vessel "Ama" leaving you to enjoy your time alone as "Swiss Family Robinson" before paddling back to us in Avalon. Check out the Kayak Camping section on our website www.kayakcatalinaisland.com

So far, so good. The holiday weekend is over, we're back in business albeit an abridged version of our usual summer madness. In fact, what a great time to refresh your cooped-up spirit with a half day spent discovering our coastline and hauling up on a deserted cove for your own private meditation (or snorkeling, or picnic, or all of these). Check out our not-so Early Bird Special on our website. You can even reserve it online from there. You can be assured we're keeping our crew and you as safe as we can with our cleaning, sanitizing and distancing protocols in place. Wear your mask! (you can take it off while you are paddling, of course - but you'll need it when you land back at our beach). www.KayakCatalinaIsland.com/rentals See you soon!

Hello friends and fellow lovers of Catalina Island's amazing seacoast. What a treat it is to get out and paddle along shore on your own, (the ultimate distancing maneuver), and enjoy our clear water and the other sights, sounds & creatures of the marine environment! Unfortunately, due to the rise in Covid-19 amongst LA County residents, all LA County beaches have been closed for this 4th of July holiday beginning Friday and ending Sunday night. Take care, be mindful of the ...official protocols, keep you and your loved ones safe. We'll be back in operation 9am Monday morning July 6th. . . so worth waiting for. We'll be masked up, and so must you. See you then! (If you are on island for this holiday and want to kayak, please see our friends at Avalon Boat Stand on the pier, or the Wet Spot near the boat terminal- they'll be able to get you out on the water) See more

Until the world opens up again, spend a few minutes and let the island's peace settle in.

Howdy friends of DBOS and Catalina Island! The island is 'closed' to visitors until it is safe again to travel and intermingle- so, too, are we. Stay healthy in the meantime and get all those little tasks you've been putting off accomplished during this interim. Our home office is open for future tour and camp kayak reservations at 310-510-1588. We don't know exactly when, but we'll see you this summer!

Let us hope this time of upheaval passes quickly. We are continuing to monitor the available information on the virus and what that means to us on the island. The health and safety of our community and especially our fantastic crew is our primary concern. As long as there is transportation bringing visitors to and from Catalina Island, we will continue to operate our tours and rentals - barring any directives from our city, state or federal government. Call ahead for hours of operation as they may change. Stay safe and healthy, wash your hands, avoid crowds, get outside! What better way to relieve the stress of this heavy situation, than to experience nature here in paradise. "There are moments when all anxiety and stated toil are becalmed in the infinite leisure and repose of nature" -Henry David Thoreau

Speaking of epic conditions, it doesn't get any better than this for paddling ... we enjoyed spending the morning with a phenomenal group of cadets from all across Canada. They had spent the previous 5 days hiking the Trans Catalina Trail from Hermit Gulch to Parsons and back to Two Harbors where we met them with kayaks and two of our top guides. (This will give their legs a break and give their arms a workout instead). They're paddling the coast to primitive boat-in site Cabrillo Beach for the night. They'll paddle to Avalon tomorrow (Valentine's day) for more fun on the ropes course and volunteering on a beach cleanup with the Conservancy, staying 2 more nights at Hermit Gulch Campground before heading back to Canada. Sound like fun? Call us, we'll help you put a trip together for your group 310-510-1588.

In case you're wondering- the hard, translucent jelly-like "fingers" you're seeing in the water and on some of the beaches (notably Frog Rock Beach) are Firey Pyrosomes and are not closely related to jellyfish. They are tunicates with a primitive back bone (notochord) and are our closest relative in the invertebrate world, close being a relative word. Anyway these "fire salps" drift along on the currents until they show up where we can see them. If you're out at night and lucky to be paddling or diving/snorkeling near them, their bioluminescence is amazing!

Tagging along on the morning commute with Mary Theresa Stein and Descanso Beach Ocean Sports. Epic conditions for kayak camping on the island.

Had a nice paddle to Long Point beach yesterday for a picnic lunch and return trip. Saw a myriad of sea life along the way including California Sea Lions, Bald Eagles, and Leopard Sharks. Thanks DBOS for the opportunity to explore and appreciate where i live.
