This year for Valentine's we're shining a spotlight on the superior chocolatier, Sjaak's. For over 15 years, Sjaak's Organic Chocolates has been crafting handmade, vegan, organic chocolates from their factory in Blue Lake, Calif. near Arcata. Founded by Jacques Holten whose chocolate roots go back to when he was a 10 year old helping out in his sister's bakery in the Netherlands. They craft their chocolates, all of them, by hand from roasting and grinding to finished product...s. Each bar and bite is both vegan and organic and crafted to allow the chocolate to speak for itself. And it sings. We have a variety of chocolate hearts, truffles, and caramels too. Get yours while supplies last.

This is Karl and his daughter, the founders of BubbleBeans Coffee based in Hayward, CA. In 2019, Karl was working a full-time job in the tech industry, but he noticed that he didn’t get to see his daughter growing up. When she was 11-years-old, according to Karl, she said I really don't want presents anymore I want to go to places I've never been, and I want to do it with you, Dad.... Since then, Karl has committed to giving his daughter experiences including founding their very own coffee company. Coffee has always been a big part of Karl’s family. His grandmother used to roast coffee using the traditional method of roasting green coffee in an iron pot over a fire. The smell of brewing coffee has been a constant in Karl’s life. My mom’s crazy about coffee she’s like a three-pot-a-day person, he says. This family-owned business has carefully curated a range of delicious coffees. While they don’t use fire-roasting like Karl’s grandmother, Karl says they are involved in every step of the journey that the coffee takes from the farm to your cup. BubbleBeans coffee works with smaller, boutique farms that offer fair trade and use sustainable practices. After that, Karl and his team analyze the coffee’s flavor profile and roast the beans to enhance those particular notes. Their newest range of coffee was sourced directly from a small farm in Colombia. The coffee isn’t the only thing that’s part of the family, Karl’s daughter designs all of the artwork on their bags! Check them out BubbleBeans.Biz and grab a bag of their coffee in-store today!

Because everything is on the line this November; lives, livelihoods, health care, women's rights, voting rights, the climate crisis, even our very democracy, it bears repeating -- VOTE!!! If you have not yet voted, you have one week left to get your ballots in or solidify your plan to vote on Election Day. If you can go early in person, do it now. If you're returning an absentee ballot, do it now at an official ballot dropbox - go to acvote.org for Alameda County locations. Do not rely on the USPS at this point. You have to vote, but don't stop there. Call, text, email friends, family, neighbors, old roommates, strangers and get them engaged. Sign up to volunteer for outreach opportunities where a final push can be made. But most of all, make a plan and VOTE to make our voices undeniably heard.

But now that you're hopefully inspired to carve your own creation, you're going to want to grab your own "gourd-geous" Jack-O-Lantern pumpkin just like the o...nes that will be used tomorrow. Katrin’s Wafels are the perfect on-the-go snack. This week’s Staff Sunday features Katrin’s staff pick: Rip Van Dutch Caramel and Vanilla Wafels. Katrin says these individual packs of caramel-filled wafels are hard to resist. It’s yummy. I’ll eat it all times of day breakfast, lunch, and dinner. At Castro Valley Natural Grocery, we deal in #onlygoodthings, and this healthy take on the classic Dutch stroopwafel (literally translated to sugar waffle) keeps the delicious...ness without the excessive sugars. With only 3 grams of sugar, @ripvanwafels are good for you and satisfy your sweet tooth. The SF-based company started in the founders’ dorm room and still has less than 50 employees despite its nationwide popularity. I love to support small businesses, Katrin says. Katrin gives these wafels 5 stars, and you might too!

This is Fred the Truck. Next weekend, our fantastic old farm truck, Fred, is scheduled to make his debut on the Marketplace paseo. Fred is a retired fellow now, but he used to belong to a working farm that was once such an integral part of our landscape not so long ago.... This old beat-up beauty has been lovingly retrofitted, and his presence will provide us with a year-round reminder and celebration around the cultivation of food, our local history, and the harvest. And we hope he will become a bit of a Castro Valley icon too. We will have some small covid-friendly festivities for his arrival so stay tuned for more details about that and his history. #fredthetruck

This Halloween forget about cheesy costumes and opt for a kind of costumed cheese instead. Over in our Cheese Department, we now have Scream Cheese from Jasper Hill Farm Made by one of the best cheesemakers in the country, Scream Cheese uses their Weybridge as the base but adds annatto for natural orange color, and a thin layer of ash for a truly frightful looking delicacy. ... But that's not all. You'll also find a cheese called Old Witch, which is an Alpine-style cheese. It’s the very popular Red Witch cheese but aged even further, and is perfect for Fall. If Red Witch is more your thing, you can find some of that too. Be sure to drop in and grab the season-appropriate cheeses while supplies last.

Can you bee-lieve it? Castro Valley Honey is here! We’re so excited, we could just shout it from the rooftops -- which is actually home to the 4 bustling hives we’ll be harvesting from today. Your local bees have been busy at work, spending those warm summer days visiting flower after flower to create the most delicious honey around. And now is your chance to bring some hyper-local liquid gold home with you.... Today from 2pm to close, our beekeeper, Mike of @thebeeranchers, will be extracting the honey in the @castrovalleymarketplace. He’ll show you the final steps of the process of fresh honey being made as it’s extracted, spun, and later bottled right on site. Maybe you've seen one of our honeybees bounding about town; from your backyard to the boulevard, from hopping about in the hills to as near as the flowers on our paseo, these mighty bee-auties have searched the scene for a mix of nectars that represent the very best the area has to offer. All while playing a crucial role in maintaining a healthy environment for us all. Made nearly exclusively of Castro Valley flowers, this truly is your honey. Bee-autiful!

It's not too late for you to get your hands on these Early Girl dry-farmed tomatoes. These gems are coming from long-time farm friends of ours, Happy Boy Farms near Watsonville. Happy Boy harvests, packs, and washes all their products by hand which is then delivered directly to farmer's markets and stores like ours. Happy Boy has been producing organic food for over 20 years and manages several plots of land, each with its own unique microclimate and soil structure. Some of... which are perfectly suited for dry farming, a method that relies primarily on residual moisture to feed the plants. After the plants are established, irrigation is cut off; forcing the roots deep into the soil for water and nutrients. The lack of water content in the tomato results in a more vibrant flavor. And it conserves a ton of water which is almost sweeter. They're a bit smaller and rounder than your average tomato, but their brilliant bright red appearance is matched by their intense flavor and rich texture making sure you know this isn't your average tomato. You can enjoy these Early Girls in salads, sauces, salsas, and they're ideal for late summer canning projects too.

You wouldn't know it by looking at it, but this is vegan cheese. You might not even know it after tasting it too. This Farmhouse Cheddar is from Petaluma's @miyokoscreamery and is made with cultured oat milk, other plant-based ingredients, and some old school cheese-making artistry to be one of the most satisfying alternatives around. Miyoko, the woman behind the company, is a former jazz singer from Tokyo turned vegan chef who's passion for animal welfare and compassionate f...ood has fueled her company's growth. By providing vegan products that taste and act like the traditional ones, it makes it so much simpler to adopt a more plant-based diet which has enormous environmental benefits too. We carry a range of Miyoko's goods but wanted to let you know that the Farmhouse Cheddar block, slices, and shreds, as well as the Pepperjack slices and shreds, are now on sale for just $4.19 each. That's down from the regular price of $5.79. The sale runs until the end of the month. Miyoko's makes it easier to go vegan, think you might want to give a try?

Castro Valley Honey is almost here. Come be a part of the first harvest of our rooftop honey. Your local bees have been busy and soon you'll get a chance to bring some hyper-local liquid gold home with you. On Wednesday, October 21st, our beekeeper Mike of The Bee Ranchers, LLC will be extracting the honey in the Castro Valley Marketplace ... We're big on bees in our company, and of course, had to have hives on the Castro Valley rooftop where four of them are going strong. The honey is nice and all, but the reason we keep bees is that they keep us fed and they need our protection. They've propped up ecosystems for tens of millions of years, and are responsible for pollinating about 90% of the world's nutrition. That's kind of a big deal. Maybe you've seen one of our honeybees bounding about town, so now would be a great time for you and your families to get a direct connection to their work. Come see for yourself the final steps of the process of fresh honey being made as it's extracted, spun, and bottled right on site. Mike's got an encyclopedic knowledge of everything bee. It's a great chance to learn all about beekeeping, bees, honey, and any other bee-related questions you've got. Castro Valley Honey Harvest Wednesday, October 21st 2 pm - close Castro Valley Marketplace 3295 Castro Valley Blvd. Castro Valley, CA 94546

Beans. Beautiful, bountiful beans. Little nutritional powerhouses that are too often relegated to the side. But why? They're so versatile, you can use them in soups, salads, and entrees in many types of cuisine. And they're tasty little canvases to work wonders with. Maybe you just haven't had the real deal beans that demand to be more prominent on your plates. This is where Rancho Gordo comes in. For almost two decades Napa's Rancho Gordo has been bringing the heartier and h...arder to grow heirlooms varieties to market. Their efforts have both brought renewed interest in the possibility of pulses, but also preserving a heritage of food that is often more flavorful, colorful, even whimsical. Sometimes something as simple as that is worth celebrating. Next time your in make sure to add some Rancho Gordo beans to your basket.
