The father of rhythm tap, John Bubbles, revolutionized tap dance as the first tapper to drop his heels. By using his entire foot (heel and toe), he created rhythmically complex and syncopated footwork while maintaining a relaxed upper body. Today, we call this style rhythm tap. dance of the future. Among those he influenced directly were Fred Astaire, tapper and actress Eleanor Powell and Chuck Green Today, tap dancers like Jason Samuels Smith and Savion Glover use Bubbles’ approach to syncopation, improvisation and complexity. She dances right in the heart of the music. Brunilda Ruiz, an American ballerina of depth and passion who from the 1950s to the ’70s excelled in a broad range of 20th-century choreography as a founding member of both the Robert Joffrey Ballet and the Harkness Ballet. She also danced in the ballets of George Balanchine, Alvin Ailey, Jerome Robbins and Gerald Arpino, among others. Ms. Ruiz, who was born in Puerto Rico, was an important role model for future Hispanic ballet da...ncers, said Sasha Anawalt, the author of Robert Joffrey (1996). She was in many regards a pioneer consciously or unconsciously the epitome of grace and moral stamina. #hispanicheritagemonth #hispanicdance #latinodance #dancersofinstagram #dancestudio #danceclass #danceclasses #danceislife #dancersareathletes #sanjose #almaden #campell #california #bayareadance #bayarea #losgatos #willowglen #dancemoms #dancemom #ballerinas #ballet #hiphop #hiphopdance #jazzdance #dancelyrical #contemporarydance #tapdance

In honor of Indigenous Peoples Day....the incredible, Maria Tallchief. Dance from your heart and love your music and the audience will love you in return. At the age of 17, Maria Tallchief moved to New York City to pursue her dreams of becoming a dancer. She went from dance company to dance company looking for work. Many of the companies discriminated against her because of her Native American ancestry. Rejection did not stop Tallchief; she continued working towards her go...al and eventually became one of America’s most popular ballerinas. Elizabeth Marie Tall Chief was born January 24, 1925 in Fairfax, Oklahoma. Her father was a member of the Osage Nation. Her mother, Ruth Porter, had grown up very poor and was never able to take dancing lessons. Therefore, when Tallchief and her sister Marjorie showed interest in dance her mother immediately placed them in lessons. Tallchief excelled at dance and music. Tallchief moved to New York City to pursue ballet full time. She was selected as an understudy in the Ballet Russe, the premier Russian ballet company in the United States at the time. As her career began to take off, many tried to persuade Tallchief to change her last name so that dance companies would not discriminate against her. She refused and continued to perform as Maria Tallchief. In 1947, she became the first American to dance with the Paris Opera Ballet. After marrying choreographer George Balanchine, who created her signature Firebird role, she became prima ballerina of the New City Ballet. Tallchief was also the first American to perform at the Bolshoi Theater in Moscow. After retiring from dancing, Tallchief and her sister opened the Chicago City Ballet, a ballet school and dance company. Never forgetting her Native American ancestry, she spoke out against injustices and discrimination. As prima ballerina, Tallchief not only broke barriers for Native Americans, she also became one of the only Americans recognized in European ballet companies. Tallchief died on April 11, 2013. Evelyn Cisneros is considered the first Hispanic Prima Ballerina in the United States, but it almost didn’t turn out that way. Raised in a small California town and of Mexican Heritage, Evelyn discovered her talent entirely by accident when her mother encouraged her to try ballet as a way to overcome shyness. Cisneros went on to have an illustrious 23-year career with San Francisco Ballet, where she was the leading ballerina in everything from Swan Lake and Sleeping Beauty... to a more contemporary ballet about Native Americans called A Song for Dead Warriors, which was choreographed just for her. It was instilled in us at a young age that we were role models for our people. I carried that through my whole life, she says. I always felt my Mexican heritage gave me a richer well to draw from, not the opposite. #hispanicheritagemonth #latinas #latinodance #dancersofinstagram #dancestudio #danceclass #danceclasses #danceislife #dancersareathletes #sanjose #almaden #campell #california #bayareadance #bayarea #losgatos #willowglen #dancemoms #dancemom #ballerinas #ballet #hiphop #hiphopdance #jazzdance #dancelyrical #contemporarydance #tapdance

In honor of Hispanic Heritage Month we introduce the legend Alicia Alonso. Miss Alonso was a Cuban ballerina who is most famous for her role as Giselle. Partially blind from the age of 19, her partners always had to be in the exact spot she expected them to be because she used the lights in different parts of the stage to guide her! The Latina ballet grand-dame was so brilliant that she danced solos well into her 70s, when she was forced to step from the stage due to failing eyesight. As the longtime director of the National Ballet of Cuba, she was directly responsible for shaping some of the most renowned ballet stars. Miss Alonso died in 2019 at the age of 98, a legend and an inspiration to dancers around the world. Dance is not exercise. Dance is Art Alicia Alonso
