In order to dismantle white supremacy, advance racial justice, and attempt to mitigate forces of Native invisibility and anti-Blackness, people of privilege must commit to a lifelong practice of listening to others and educating ourselves to ensure that racism exists no further. Stories have the power to spark change, but only if those privileged are willing to take issue with their internal biases and acknowledge the discrimination displayed in our society. Some of our siste...rs have volunteered their voices as they vulnerably provide their truths about racial prejudices they have faced and how even then, do not equate to those experiences of the Black community. We note that these stories have been written by women of color, not Black women. We understand these terms differ and fully acknowledge the absence of Black women in our chapter. This absence is an issue that we are actively working to change, as we want all women to know that Alpha Phi welcomes all races and has no tolerance towards discrimination of any degree. We hope that after hearing from these women, this publication not only provides a sense of comfort for those who may feel alone but also motivates readers to hear out others’ stories and take steps towards racial justice. A message from our President: In these past few weeks, we have taken a break in lieu of our regular posting to allow space for other voices to be heard. As a chapter, we strive for and encourage these ongoing conversations as we cannot be silenced until we achieve justice and unity. We must continue to educate each other and ourselves on the structural racism that, unfortunately, comprises our nation. The sisters of Epsilon Chi have collated a list of courses and external resources that we personally found beneficial in better educating on the circulating topics at hand. Leaving behind my high school best friends and attending a college where I didn’t know anyone was nerve wracking to say the least. I always knew I wanted to join a sorority and I’ll never forget the summer before freshman year fall quarter when all the other colleges had gone through recruitment. I was patiently waiting for m...y turn. Asking them all for advice, as I’m sure everyone heard, they told me to Trust the Process. I am so happy that I listened and found my home at Alpha Phi. This weeks #whereyoubelongwednesday is brought to you by our VP of Community Relations, Lindsey Rutherford! Going into my freshman year I knew I wanted to be involved in Greek life more than anything. I hoped to find my group of forever friends through recruitment and I could not have imagined a better outcome. Alpha Phi has provided me with my best friends, roommates, and over 200 sisters. I have always received unconditional support from every member in Alpha Phi. They ...have pushed me to do my best and been by my side no matter what. I am fortune enough to have been able to study abroad with a large group of my sisters. Traveling the world with them was an experience I will never forget. I will be telling stories for the rest of my life. Being selected to serve on exec is something I will always be thankful for. I would have never had this opportunity if my sisters did not believe in my abilities. Planning philanthropy events alongside the most talented and driven girls I have ever met was one of the most rewarding experiences I’ve ever had. Whether I’m living with them, running around the world, planning Red Dress Gala or zooming them during quarantine, I know as long as I have these girls I have everything I could ever need. I can thank Alpha Phi for an eternity of experiences and opportunities, but most importantly for friendships that I will cherish for the rest of my life. Fall quarter of my second year I ran home to Alpha Phi and knew that I had found the sisters I never had and a support system like no other. Happy #phifriday from 3rd year Marissa! My biggest fear about going through recruitment as a 3rd-year transfer student was that I wouldn’t be able to find my second home or a solid group of friends. I knew that I would be much older than the majority of the girls rushing, but I decided I would give it a shot and hope for the best. I am so glad that I made that decision! All of the girls at Alpha Phi that I met throughout the recruitment process made me feel right at home ...and welcomed me with open arms. Alpha Phi has made my transition to Cal Poly much easier and way more fun than I could have ever imagined. My first year at Cal Poly will be one I will never forget because of Alpha Phi. The summer before, all of my friends asked if I was going to join a sorority. When I got to SLO, all the girls I met asked if I was going to go through recruitment. I was not sure if joining Greek life was for me, but all of my roommates signed up for recruitment so I thought that I might as well try it. This ended up being one of the best... decisions I have ever made! I could not imagine going through college without Alpha Phi. Not only has this sorority brought me to some of my best friends that I will have forever, but it has given me endless leadership opportunities that have helped prepare me for my future! For Senior Week’s #phifriday , we’re highlighting this amazing household of Alpha Phi women! Three years ago, Alpha Phi brought us all together at the beginning of our sophomore year. We all lived in the chapter house together, which led us to become best friends and to continue living together for two more years in White House. We are so grateful for the amazing three years we had together, thanks to the help of Alpha Phi, and we are so happy to be leaving our home with a new group of girls to continue their journey in Alpha Phi. We are so lucky to have a home and group of friends that make it so hard to go separate ways, but know that regardless of postgrad plans these friendships are lifelong! On #WhereYouBelongWednesday ,we highlight a new member of our executive team and how Alpha Phi has helped them grow into the women they are today! First, get to know our President, Vivianne Tu! Alpha Phi has given me endless opportunities, irreplaceable moments, my future bridesmaids, and sisters of a lifetime. Flashing back in time a bit, a few months before starting my journey in SLO, I went through a traumatic death in my family. It completely took me by shock and e...verything suddenly felt blurred. I was unsure of where I belonged and how to get acclimated to my new home. As much as Alpha Phi was there for me, I wasn’t personally ready to dive in with two feet yet. And that’s okay! People open up in different aspects at their own desired speed. It wasn’t until my first Red Dress Gala where I was reconfirmed that I found my home. Our philanthropy brought me and my family together to honor someone special to us. I felt so inspired to be a part of a womanhood that holds such high values near my heart that I strived to be as involved as I could. At the core, I'm a very determined person; my mind is always go-go-go. As many hear during recruitment, You get what you put into the sorority, which rang true for me because before I knew it, I was elected Vice President of Finance, I became a mom to my amazing little, and Alpha Phi became my life and more! At such a crucial time in my life, I found my much needed support system and haven’t looked back since. Now, as Chapter President, I hope to make as big an impact as Alpha Phi has made on me. Today we remember and celebrate the 64th birthday of our philanthropy: the Alpha Phi Foundation! The Alpha Phi Foundation partners with the American Heart Association to support women’s heart health. Throughout the year, we raise awareness and fundraise in many ways including Red Dress Gala, Hoops for Hearts, Alpha Phifa, and more. While our philanthropy events this year can no longer be held in person, we will continue to support heart health in any way we can. #phifriday Senior Lauren Romano shares about her special bond with her sister that’s only grown stronger with sisterhood: Alpha Phi has always been my home away from home, and now my sister gets to have that same experience and a lot of the same memories that have been so special to me throughout college because of Alpha Phi.
