In recognition of Filipino-American History Month, we are highlighting a few of our Filipinx Cal Lutheran community members! Jennelyn Tumalad, program specialist at our Center for Nonprofit Leadership, studied art history and visual arts and received her master's degree in History of Art and Design from the Pratt Institute. Her proudest moment was designing and creating the content for College Night, the first program she managed at the J. Paul Getty Museum. "I wanted to appr...oach this program in a way that felt closest to socially engaged practices as I could...This involvement and collaboration caused the attendance to skyrocket compared to the previous year: the number of participants rose from 1600 to 2600 in attendance. It was as simple as involving the community, valuing their perspective, and nurturing the relationship so that they all felt a stake and desire to see this event be successful." Jennelyn says the biggest challenge she has faced in her career as a Filipina American is "a feeling of invisibility" and a lack of cultural diversity and competence. She says, "When I was in college, I was not cognizant of how extremely euro-centric my curriculum was. I didn’t realize how all my college and career pursuits were informed entirely by success as it was defined by white America...Through these actions you communicate to yourself and to others that other cultures, values, languages, and histories are not as important as European culture, values, languages, and history. Without realizing it you are perpetuating the erasure of your own culture and community because you’re just following what you’re being taught." Now, her passion is to advocate and celebrate Filipinx stories, history, and experience: "It’s on us to write ourselves into history, to advocate for our presence in curriculum, and take the space we deserve as one of the largest foreign born groups in America."

Cal Lutheran alumna Paige Poggione wrote and performed an original song during the Sunrise Remembrance Ceremony, an annual event honoring the 58 people who lost their lives at the Route 91 Harvest Music Festival in Las Vegas. "It’s really cool that I got to perform it for all of the victims, families and everybody that came out to support all the victims’ familiesit kind of feels like a full-circle experience, Poggione said. I wrote it as a way, just for myself, the fact that I got the opportunity to share it with other people was such an honor for me."
