Last week, our disABILITY Services division had their second speakers in the Career Discover Series do their presentation. Owners Lina Hoshino and Angelo Sacerdote of Petaluma Pies showed us the ins and outs of their local pie shop! We had the incredible opportunity to have a tour of their shop and kitchen. There were also many demonstrations of different job duties and prep being done. We would like to thank Petaluma Pies for coming and talking to us. If you're looking for some yummy pie made with love and only local ingredients, go check them out! #PetalumaPies #careerdiscoveryseries #Pies #disABILITYServices #Pieshop

Before this month ends, we would like to acknowledge Lori! Last week was Loris last day working at our disABILITY Services Program. Lori was a Direct Support Facilitator. Over the years, she taught on-site classes, helped with production work, supported individuals in accessing the community, and helped support the clerical crew who worked at Sutter. She was and is an amazing asset. Thank you Lori for paving the way for 10 years of service to CHD/disABILITY Services!! We hope you enjoy your retirement! You will be greatly missed! #WomensHistoryMonth #Retirement #disABILITYServices #PavingTheWay #WHM

Finally, as Giving Tuesday concludes, we want to give a special thanks to you all. Those that follow our work, share our stories, or even may be past clients are like family to us. We are in this together and can always learn and support one another in our journeys. We encourage you to keep compassion in your heart not just during this one day or season, but always. CHD will always be willing to provide compassion and care to those who are seeking it. "Well maybe we can't change the entire universe or the whole world, but we can start with one person. We're going to do it one by one" - Aurelio Hurtado, One of California Human Development's Founders
As the United States prepares for the presidential election, we would like to remind our followers, organizations, families, friends, and individuals to vote this year. CHD's activist and founder, George Ortiz, would consistently remind every person in his presence to vote when he spoke. CHD would like to dedicate this voting year to George who has greatly impacted CHD in many ways. Rest in power.
When the mission is simple, the work is always fulfilling. We want to support those in the margins to realize their full potential. We strive to remove barriers to access and create more equitable communities.
This month is National Disabilities Employment Awareness Month and disABILITY Services here at California Human Development takes pride in the many individuals we've been able to provide supports to and job coaching. Our team's work supports individuals with disabilities in being regular contributing members to their local communities through their employment. Some of our updates this month will be spotlighting the amazing work of the individuals we support.

If you haven't heard by now, CHD has been searching for a new Chief Executive Officer with the passion and resolve to take on the challenge of leading our organization across our 31 Northern California counties. Last month, CHD publicly announced that after reviewing over 100 eligible and qualified individuals, the Board of Directors chose Thomas Stuebner as our new Chief Executive Officer. Thomas brings a wealth of experience after working and leading health and human servic...es organizations in over 20 states in the USA and 20 countries worldwide during his professional career of over 40 years! The basis of his work and leadership style is promoting access to organizations like CHD through the values of equity and social justice. Thomas saw the CEO position at California Human Development as "the ideal opportunity to support a noble mission to fight poverty by being of service to deserving people." He's excited to take on the challenge, and we are so happy to welcome him to the CHD family.
This past Tuesday, our San Joaquin team was BACK AT IT AGAIN, with food distribution to around 250 people that could use the support during this time. This distribution took place at CHD's Lodi Office. The people who came to this distribution took home 35 pounds of food, including fresh fruit and vegetables. The team also gave out 20 disposable face masks to each person and other information about COVID-19 resources in the community so everyone can stay safe during the pandemic. This distribution was possible thanks to our partnership with the Second Harvest Food Bank of Manteca, CA
Last week some of our San Joaquin Farmworkers' Services team did amazing work outreaching to their local community partners and providing COVID-19 personal protective equipment to essential farmworkers. Specifically, last Thursday (9/24) the team visited Pacheco Farm Labor to promote the services we offer. The team was able to set up an outreach table to distribute information about CHD, sign farmworkers up to receive information about specific programs they could utilize, an...d pass out facemasks to keep the farmworkers safe at this site safe during the pandemic. AND...Last Friday (9/25) the team visited Peirano State Vineyards through Santibanez Farm Labor Contractor to provide similar information and resources to farmworkers harvesting at this location. We were able to give wellness kits providing facemasks and gift cards to the local market for these workers. Overall, getting our resources, services, and information directly out into the community is crucial in supporting the people we have the privilege of serving. Thank you to the San Joaquin team for doing this great work. And thank you to our partners in the field allowing us to support these workers for the better of our shared communities overall! We're all in this together!
Unfortunately, wildfire season is still going on and it's becoming too common of an occurrence. We wanted to send out this checklist to make sure you're prepared in case an evacuation order comes. Please stay safe and take care of each other.
Our disABILITY Services program here at CHD has been celebrating Direct Support Professionals Recognition Week which has been September 13th-19th.
