We’re hard at work behind the scenes on the 18th annual Theodore Payne Foundation 2021 Native Plant Garden Tour! With all the time spent at home this year, many... of us have had a chance to look more closely at the world around us. This is the story we hope to tell during the 2021 tour. A story about the simple joys of life, like the passing of the seasons (yes Southern California has seasons, ask any native plant gardener!), a rare flower blooming, an interesting shadow dancing in the wind, a flush of bright green new growth, or an unexpected avian visitor. To tell this story we’ll be going online again, with new technology this time around. We’ll visit a small selection of our favorite gardens throughout the year, for a chance to see how they change over the course of the seasons. The tour kicks off on April 16th-18th, and returns later in the year to follow up on the yearly cycle that native plant gardens go through. There will be thought provoking conversations, expert horticultural and design advice, and much more. We’re super excited about it, and hope that you will join us! Check the link below to visit our Native Plant Garden Tour webpage, where you can learn more about the 2021 tour, and access archives of previous years. #nativeplantgardentour #californianativeplants https://www.nativeplantgardentour.org/

I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in both the essential contribution of native people to the abundant land that was found when settlers first ca...me to California, and the native plants we know and love, and ways they were tended for greater flourishing, health, and growth. The best of nature isn't necessarily "untouched wilderness," but places that are lovingly and attentively touched through tending, stewardship, and intelligent, ancient practices. A lot of food for thought, I'm humbled and amazed. See more

Haydee is a master of all things seed and has honed her craft over 32 years with Tree of Life Nursery. Here, she is stimulating the germination of fire-following species by carefully burning pine needles over freshly sown seed flats.
