Today, we honor and celebrate Charlotte E. Ray, the first Black female lawyer in the United States. Her admission was used as a precedent by women in other states who sought admission to the Bar. On this day, and every day, IABA NorCal acknowledges the necessity of representation in the legal field, beginning with folks like Ms. Ray. Let us know how has representation in the legal field impacted your journey? with IABA NorCal

Today we recognize Justice Thurgood Marshall, the first Black American to serve on the U.S. Supreme Court, and a trailblazer in many fields of jurisprudence -- most notably civil rights and criminal procedure. Prior to serving on the Bench, Marshall was Chief Counsel for the NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund, winning 29 out of 32 cases he argued before the Supreme Court. In Marshall's most historic case as lead counsel, Brown v. Board of Education (1954), the Supre...me Court ruled that "separate but equal" public education was unconstitutional, overturning Plessy v. Ferguson (1896), which had protected state-mandated segregation laws. Upon his passing, Marshall's personal papers and notes were given to the Library of Congress. Justice Marshall's Bible was used at Vice President Kamala Harris's inauguration as the first Black, Asian-American, and female U.S. Vice President on January 20, 2021. Share with us in the comments - How does Justice Marshall’s legacy of equality, justice, and education inspire your work and values today?

CABL STATEMENT RE JUSTICE JENKINS NOMINATION The California Association of Black Lawyers(CABL) congratulates longtime CABL member Justice Martin Jenkins(Retired) on being nominated by Governor Gavin Newsom as an Associate Justice of the California Supreme Court. Justice Jenkins has served as Governor Newsom’s Judicial Appointments Secretary since 2019. He was tasked with efforts to build a judiciary that reflects the vibrancy and diversity of California. As Judicial Appo...intments Secretary he spearheaded transparency efforts by making public the Regional Judicial Selection Advisory Committees that had been secret during previous gubernatorial administrations. Born and raised in the Bay Area, Justice Jenkins began serving on the Alameda Superior Court in 1992. In 1997 he was appointed by President Bill Clinton to the United States District Court for the Northern District of California. From 2008 until 2019 he served as Associate Justice on the California Court of Appeal, First Appellate District. CABL has collaborated with Justice Jenkins in advancing diversity in the judiciary on the state court and appellate court levels. He spoke at the 2018 Annual Conference Judicial Luncheon and at the 2019 Legislative Day at the State Capitol about ways to encourage outstanding African American lawyers to apply for the bench. If confirmed by the Commission on Judicial Appointments, Justice Jenkins would be the third African American male and first LGBTQ+ person to serve on the California Supreme Court.
