A community is at its best when it acts to #ChooseBlackLives. Investing in Black communities benefits the collective future of all Californians. Instead, we have chosen to invest in mass incarceration. Let’s heed the call of the #BlackLivesMatter movement. We must shift funds from punishing and incarcerating people towards health, education, food, job training and other critical needs! Call the Governor to tell him we need community-based alternatives to traditional policing: https://p2a.co/BLIE6lZ #ChooseHealthNotHandcuffs #DefundPolice #ChooseUs #RepCA

VICTORY! A big win last week for organizers including Brothers, Sons, Selves Coalition, Students Deserve, Community Coalition, Innercity Struggle, Youth Justice Coalition, and Community Asset Development Re-defining Education (CADRE) who fought for and won a 35% cut to the LAUSD School Budget. This is a huge step in decriminalizing students and the $25m divestment away from police can now be invested into resources and support for Black students.

"Today people tend to assume police were placed in schools in response to the first school shooting at Columbine High School in 1999. But in reality, police presence in Oakland schools has a long, racist past that needs to be shed and undone. The origin of police in schools is rooted in a racist ideological reaction to the mass migration of Southern Black families to Oakland in the 1940s and 1950s." #ReimagineSchoolSafety #AbolishSchoolPolice
