With one week to go before our Salute to Armed Forces Golf Tournament, we thought it would be fitting to have Traumatic Brain Injury Awareness week here at Epil...epsy Foundation of Arizona! Reminder... Always wear a helmet and make sure your children wear helmets when: Riding a bike, motorcycle, snowmobile, or all-terrain vehicle; Playing a contact sport, such as football, ice hockey, or boxing; Using in-line skates or riding a skateboard; Batting and running bases in baseball or softball; Riding a horse; or Skiing or snowboarding. Posttraumatic epilepsy (PTE) is a recurrent seizure disorder that apparently results from injury to the brain. This injury may be due to head trauma or to an operation on the brain. PTE must be differentiated from posttraumatic seizures (PTS), which is a broader-spectrum term and signifies seizures that occur as a sequel to brain injury. Seizures that occur within 24 hours after brain injury are called immediate PTS. PTS that occur within 1 week after injury are termed early PTS, and seizures that occur more than 1 week after injury are termed late PTS. About 20% of people who have a single late posttraumatic seizure never have any further seizures, and these people should not be labeled as having PTE. (Ewa Posner, MD, MRCP Consultant Pediatrician, Department of Pediatrics, University Hospital of North Durham, UK. 2011) Protect your brain.

FYI: Food related, not urgent. We try to stock a decent selection of fresh/raw fruits, juices and snacks for all our clients' in-person visits at the SF clinic. Lately, we've stocked up Odwalla bars based on parent feedback. We've tried them out and like them okay, but there's a small problem. They are neither organic (Odwalla's juices are not either) nor are they free of "hexane-extracted soy protein." (Similar to the whole ammonia-treated "pink slime" hamburger beef/ hotd...og thing. Time to re-watch Food, Inc!) Needless to say this isn't something we want to provide our patients. So...maybe this is an over-reaction but we won't be getting any more of those. ;) http://cornucopia.org/hexane-guides/hexane_guide_bars.html Good news: there are *plenty* of other certified Organic, hexane-free bars to choose from! (see link) We've also got organic GF lollipops by http://yummyearth.com/ ^K
