Few things in the professional world are as exciting as being promoted to a managerial position. Advancing to a more senior role usually involves receiving a salary increase, acquiring more decision-making power and gaining recognition. It’s really the highest form of praise for a job well done. For employees who’ve always been individual contributors, becoming a manager is both exhilarating and a bit nerve-wracking. You want to be a good leader and hit organizational goals. ...But you also want to make sure you’re being respectful of the team members who were just recently your peers. Fortunately, there are a number of things you can do to ensure a smooth transition. Dr. Kammy Haynes, organizational leadership expert and instructor at Brandman University, says that mastering some essential skills can help you swiftly become an effective team leader. Leonard Ward is the first of his family (first-gen) to achieve a college education, let alone two master’s degrees. After feeling he was missing out on a better title and pay due to a lack of education and certification, he decided to go ahead with school. Working towards his special education degree gave Ward the confidence and knowledge he’ll need to pass his board exams and receive the title and pay he deserves. Ward has attended both a traditional college and Brandman’s ...online master’s program. He found that Brandman’s professors were more accessible, encouraging student questions through emails and texts. Though he didn’t interact with his classmates in a physical classroom, Ward found peer support through Brandman’s online community, where he was able to study and learn with fellow Brandman students. Is something holding you back at your job? Your story could be just like Ward’s. Begin the path to achieving your professional goals.
