Boulderscape artisans installed a 12- 16 thick shotcrete layer to complete the structural and architectural finish for Brookfield, CT Department of Transportation. Boulderscape installed a 20,000+ sqft retaining wall in record installation time of only 8 days, while saving client 39% in costs over alternative wall finishes. The installation of this 21,800+ square foot retaining wall in Brookfield Granite finish was required to construct a new segment of the Rte 7 Highway i...n Brookfield, CT. Though CDOT originally planned to install a cast-in-place wall at this location, Boulderscape was ultimately selected to install this basalt formation due to the finish’s significant cost-savings and more natural appearance. Boulderscape designed a natural looking finish to blend well with the environment and not only saved a substantial amount in costs but was also very aesthetically appealing. The main challenge for this project was that the existing slopes were undulated and using Bouldersape’s sculpted rock finishes, BSI was able to take advantage of that and make the walls appear more 3 dimensional and natural-looking. Frisco, Texas Department of Transportation hired Boulderscape to install over 93,000 sqft of structural shotcrete, with class A steel trowel finish in only 39 days. Boulderscape completed the project beautifully and efficiently while saving them 23% in costs to alternative wall finishes. A total of 93,000 square feet of hand sculpted shotcrete was installed for Frisco using a soil nail wall shoring system. Boulderscape was chosen to install the 8 thick structural shotcrete s...ystem with a class A sponge float finish because of their record-breaking speedy installation. The finished face also received construction joints cut in every 32’ on center. The expansion joints into the face of the concrete were designed to keep the structural concrete from cracking, always considering weather conditions. The toughest challenge for this project was acquiring the concrete that was in heavy demand due to work being done on highways and bridges in the area. Boulderscape had to go with volume metric a mobile ready-mix plan to produce the concrete on site to be able to easily supply the concrete when needed. The Lair Reptile exhibit located at the LA Zoo was completed in 2012 by Boulderscape. It includes 49 separate exhibits between 2 buildings and houses over 60 species. Fun fact, some of reptiles housed here have been confiscated from smugglers at LAX airport.

Boulderscape artisans’ hand sculpted and stained over 49,000 sqft of shotcrete placed over several soil nail walls for Department of Transportation of Corona, Ca. Boulderscape completed task in record installation time of 24 days, while saving 35% in costs over alternative wall finishes. Soil nail walls were designed by Caltrans to shore up multiple steepened slopes along 91 freeway in Corona, California. This was done to reduce the chance of possible slope failure. The aest...hetics of these soil nail walls were of high importance to Caltrans and the City of Corona. The walls needed to visually blend well with the environment while being aesthetically pleasing for passing motorists. Boulderscape’s Green River Granite finish was chosen to meet these requirements. A completed total of 49,240 square feet of Green River Granite over multiple soil nail walls was installed, with a sculpted finish of light green earth blend staining scheme. Caltrans had originally designed the wall to be a repetitious cast-in-place concrete retaining system. Boulderscape created several in house visual mock-ups to persuade Caltrans to go with a more natural-looking finish and create a more aesthetically pleasing visual. They agreed with the sculpted finish and specified a soil nail wall shoring system and Boulderscape recreated the sculpted finish. Hoag Hospital in Newport Beach hired Boulderscape to install 35,000 sqft of structural shotcrete, saving them over 30% in costs to alternative wall finishes. Boulderscape installed a 6ft structural shotcrete and a 1-4ft thick Corona Granite sculpted finish in record installation time of 9 days. Several Hoag Hospital buildings needed to be constructed at the base of a large slope. To acquire enough land to build these structures, the slope had to be cut back to a vertical stat...e and shored up by way of soil nail wall. Hoag Hospital was very concerned with the aesthetics of this large wall and chose our Newport Fractured Sandstone to meet their requirements. A total of 35,350 square feet of Newport Fractured Sandstone was installed as required. And 1087 lineal feet of V-ditch was installed behind the wall. The biggest challenge for this project was the several housing developments along the retaining wall. There were terrace greenways that soaked in water. That water would then travel down the face of the soil nail walls. Boulderscape decided to add a special water proofing system. Xypex crystalline water proofing was installed and allowed Boulderscape to seal the integral part of the concrete, not allowing the water to find its way to the beautiful work. As always, Boulderscape built several simulations showing final sculpted finish and provided mock-ups to Hoag Hospital for complete satisfaction and approval. LA Zoo hired Boulderscape to create and install over 11,000 soft of rock-work, pond elements, epoxy sculpting, model creation, waterproofing, and accent staining in record installation time of 78 days, saving the zoo 26% in costs while providing them with a 10 year warranty on the finishes. The multi-exhibit project consisted of 5 habitat environments, Oak Woodland Pond, Alligator Swamp, Damp Forest, Bite & Squeeze, and Behind the Glass. Each of these exhibits were hand craf...ted environments specifically designed to resemble the animal or insects’ natural home. A total of 11,230 sqft of shotcrete in various color blends of multi-jungle and desert formation were hand sculpted and installed. The rock-work, ponds, trees, roots and mud-banks were all created either onsite or at Boulderscape’s warehouse and shipped to the project location. All work was hand-crafted and integrally colored and topically stained with environmentally friendly products. Finally, to back Boulderscape quality, a 10 year warranty was issued for all work installed. Boulderscape produced unique, one of a kind durable routes upon shorelines and installed various types of reptilian exhibits. One of the key challenges for this project, were to recreate 8 different types of geological finishes in visual mock-ups and have the zoo pre-approve them before installation. After completion Bouldersacpe saved Caltrans over 37% over alternative finishes. The soil nail walls were designed to shore up multiple steepened slopes along the 12 freeway in Napa Valley, California. Doing so would highly reduce the chance of possible slope failure. The aesthetics of these soil nail walls were of high im...portance to Caltrans and the alluring City of Napa Valley. The walls needed to be visually pleasing for motorists, as well as fitting in with the surrounding geology. The Napa Granite finish was chosen to meet these requirements. Boulderspace completed a total of 201,440 square feet of Napa Granite finish over multiple soil nail walls. The sculpted finish was with a dark earth blend staining scheme that allowed it to blend beautifully with the existing surroundings. Some of the challenges of this project was the constant needed traffic control for safety purposes and an especially tough wall that was over 90ft tall. Boulderscape had to design a special man lift to accomplish this task. Boulderscape provided visual mock-ups to Caltrans ahead of time to ensure utmost approval and satisfaction. Boulderscape installed a 38,000 sq ft structural and architectural shotcrete with a class A sponge float finish in record breaking time saving Centene Tower over 26% over alternative wall finishes. This subterranean shoring system needed a permanent concrete facing to make it a permanent shoring system for this high-rise structure in Clayton, MO. A cast in place system was too expensive and would have extended the schedule. A structural shotcrete system was discussed, but th...e GC didn’t think it would be possible to place structural shotcrete up to 60’ high. Boulderscape supplied the GC with the necessary qualifications, and the shotcrete system was chosen over all other options. The 38,000 SF shoring wall consisted of an 11 thick structural shotcrete wall placed over a solid pile shoring wall. The shotcrete system was placed in the middle of winter to keep on schedule. Boulderscape, Inc. installed a 56,320 ft. structural and architectural shotcrete over a multitiered soil nail wall shoring system, in record breaking time, while saving Rampart Range Metro District over $100K in costs. Cabela's being one of the largest outdoor sports retailer in Lone Tree, Colorado, was looking for an economical, yet visually pleasing retaining wall system that would wrap around the back of the retail centre, while pairing well with the existing environment.... BSI designed several visual renderings and onsite mock-ups for Rampart Range Metro District. After comparing different retaining wall systems and their visual appearances, the soil nail wall shoring system was chosen, along with Boulderscape's Columnar Basalt Finish. The installation of the structural and architectural shotcrete was installed in record time, allowing the construction of Cabela's to proceed ahead of schedule. Both parties were more than pleased with the cost and time efficiency of the project. The retaining wall system consisted of several multi-tiered retaining walls. The walls' heights ranged from 10 to 36 feet with lengths ranging from 250 to 720 feet. The structural shotcrete thickness was 8 inches thick and the architectural shotcrete thickness ranged from 2 to 6 inches in thickness. A gray 4500 PSI shotcrete was used to increase durability and resist freeze thaw. The wall face was carved and stained by Boulderscape artisans, who each have over 2 million square feet of carving and staining experience. The freshly placed concrete was carefully carved and textured by them to resemble columnar basalt. All cracks and crevices created in the face of the retaining walls were carved specifically to allow water to drain down from the walls and eliminate trapped water; which could lead to spalling at the concrete's surface. Additional details were added to the walls to allow a natural-looking finish. Some of which included an undulating wall top, trees and low-lying vegetation on wall terraces and the bottom of the walls. Special permanent earth-tone stains were used to color the sculpted walls so that they would blend well with existing surroundings.
