From Range Division: In California, the lawful gun owner has the unfortunate responsibility of ensuring their legally owned weapons are of a legal configuration. The AR-15 platform in particular is a specific target of many feature restrictions and conditions. ... As we have gotten many questions regarding this issue, we thought we'd offer a quick summary of the bare-bones considerations for your Modern Sporting Rifle's configuration. The two most expedient configurations of the AR-15 platform are Featureless and Fixed Magazine. With a featureless rifle, the weapon does not have a traditional pistol grip or thumbhole stock. The buttstock must be fixed length and non-collapsible. The rifle cannot have a vertical foregrip. The muzzle device cannot be a 'flash hider' in design or designation, only brakes and compensators. This configuration allows for the weapon to maintain a detachable magazine, and does not require modifications to operation or disassembly of the weapon. Also, so long as any of the mentioned features are in place, alternative buttstocks, grips, handguards and accessories are available and modifiable. For a fixed-magazine rifle, the name gives away the core modification. The rifle's magazine must not be able to be removed by way of the native magazine release button. The weapon must be disassembled, ie the upper and lower receiver must separate, in order to allow the magazine to be released. Bullet buttons are now prohibited, and they have not been grandfathered into the current regulations. With this function in place, the weapon may maintain a collapsible stock, a vertical foregrip, and a flash hider muzzle device. Workarounds such as the 'Hellfighter' kit from Juggernaut Tactical or alternative reloading devices are available on the market.
