Malt education time! A good grain bill (or a blend of malts used to make a particular beer) is really the backbone to any brew. Hops may get the glory, but without great malt you really can't make a great beer. So today we're diving deep into one such malt we use all the time, Idaho Pilsen Malt from Great Western Malt. At Boomtown we use Idaho Pilsen Malt as a base component for most of our beers. Pilsen Malt is obviously used to make Pilsner, but its use stretches far beyond that. Its clean flavor, light color, versatility, and high efficiency give us the perfect foundation to build styles from Pilsners to IPAs to Stouts, guaranteeing control and quality. Imperial Stout met Barley Wine which met Stock Ale and you know what we found out? This weekend has been great weather for After Hours, our 5.4% Oatmeal Stout. A deep dark brew with rich notes of chocolate blended with fresh roasted coffee. It's substantial body is full of roasted notes and deep caramel tones thanks to a complex blend of malts. A generous helping of rolled oats lends to a velveteen texture and East Kent Golding hops provide balance. Mmmmmmmmm
