Attention Advanced Divers! We have 4 spots left for our Oil Rig Dive TOMORROW.... What Makes This Dive Special? Around the world, offshore oil rigs are surprisingly wanderlust-worthy spots for divers, snorkelers, and marine life enthusiasts of every kind. That’s because they attract all manner of sea creaturesfrom playful sea lions to rainbow-colored corals.... Much like the masts and hulls of ships that are sunk to create artificial reefs, the beams and columns of oil platforms are havens for coral and marine life. A Little Bit More about the "Ellen and Elly" Rigs Ellen features two drilling rigs and 80 well slots, or individual pipes located in the center of the rig that run down to the seafloor. The massive labyrinth of pillars and pipes is home to golden garibaldi, schools of other sparkling fish, and sea lions, bouncing between the beams. Elly was built to provide electricity for the two rigs nearby. In addition to her day job, her columns function as a nursery for juvenile species of fish and a jungle gym for sea lions. Her beams are also home to California marine wildlife, including families of snapper and flashy nudibranchs. Tales of giant, blob-like mola mola and graceful pelagic stingrays on the outskirts of the structure keep divers peering into the great big blue beyond. What Can We Expect? Conditions: The best conditions are generally encountered between July and December. Visibility can vary widely, ranging from less than 10 feet to more than 100 feet. Surge is a given, and currents can be strong and rapidly changing. Thermoclines are common; temperatures at depth can range from the low 50s in late spring to low 60s in the autumn. Skill set: The platforms most commonly visited (Eureka, Ellen and Elly, which offer similar underwater experiences) are considered Advanced Dives due to the unpredictability of conditions and the "bottomless" structure (Eureka lies in 700 feet of water, and Ellen and Elly lie in 260 feet). Divers must have excellent buoyancy control and be comfortable performing free descents and ascents in the open ocean. Compasses are useless underneath these steel structures, and surface signaling devices are critical.
FOUND: Flux Twin mask with corrective lenses in Catalina Island. Call us at (323) 641-7416 for more details or share to anyone in the dive community that might have lost a mask recently!
