We know that amazing things happen when you are UPRIGHT and MOBILE in labour! Being upright in labour (i.e. not lying flat on the bed!) opens your pelvis by a staggering 28-30% - that’s a THIRD more room for your baby to navigate the pelvis, rotate and descend! Your baby is 54% less likely to become distressed in labour if you are active and upright Surges (contractions) are more effective when you are in active and upright positions. Some preliminary studies show that being upright is as effective as artificial hormones (Syntocinon) in stimulating surges The length of the first stage of labour (4-10cm dilated) can be significantly shortened when women are upright and active Being upright and active has been shown to result in a 23% reduction in medically assisted births (forceps/ventouse) Being active and upright has been shown to reduce the rate of episiotomy by a staggering 21%! Studies also show that being active and upright reduces the second stage of labour (the ‘pushing’ stage) There is a whopping 29% reduction in c-section rates when women are active and upright in labour!
