My analysis of the Kobe crash. I'm pretty sure this is what the accident report will look like.
For those of you who might have wondered about the dog in the cover shot, this is the story of teaching him to fly. He was one of hell of a good pilot.
The Death List from the August, 1912 issue of Aeronautics. The total of 186 at the end is the running total up to that time.
Looking at some old research as I finish "June Bug and the Flyer," a book about the tragedy the Wright Brothers turned their magnificent invention of the airplane into, I found this... If you weren't paying attention in 1912, you might have missed it: the first (sort of) workable twin. Two engines of different manufacture, a Wright and a Hall-Scott, mounted inline. The last line of the second paragraph is, "The apparatus was awkward to handle and proved to Gill's satisfaction the uselessness of such a contraption as a flying machine."
To all my aviation and biplane ride friends: I know this page has been dormant for a while, but this is worth waking up for. My old pal Bob Dobry is up for this opportunity to fly a WACO biplane from the tip of Argentina to Florida.... I know Bob because he and I have similar tastes in airplanes and dogs. WACOs and Golden retrievers and we became fast friends in LA. He's THE man for this job. A consummate biplane pilot and aviation pro. He's the ideal candidate for this. Please get behind him in this quest all it takes is some liking and sharing here on facebook to help get the word out. The organizers of this would be crazy not to put Bob on the team. He's got a ton of WACO time, handles the airplane with perfection and is the kind of knowledgable hands-on guy who can not only fly the airplane but tend to it en route (something every WACO needs jsut about every time you fly one, let alone fly one across all of South America. Go, Bob Dobry!
