UC Berkeley/UCSF BioE Grad Program alumni change the world for the better again! to combat the catastrophic COVID-19 pandemic, we now have our first point-of-care COVID-19 rapid diagnostic, thanks to alumni of our graduate program & a UC Berkeley spin-out. the US FDA has issued its first ‘emergency use authorization (EUA)’ for an at-home active COVID-19 infection diagnostic, and lucira health founded by BioE PhD alumni Deb Mitra, PhD & John Waldeisen, PhD created & developed this urgently needed test (hopefully the first of many). FDA authorizes the first at-home coronavirus test (NY Times, https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v2/url you can access for free through our libraries) Lucira Health (formerly DiAssess) and EUA How it works: detail for providers & overview in product insert

#UCSFPride #ucsfstandsupforscience Congratulations UCSF Advisory Board Members! This morning, President-elect Joe Biden and Vice President-elect Kamala Harris announced the establishment of the Biden-Harris Transition COVID-19 Advisory Board. 3 UCSF Professors were honored to be named: Advisory Board Co-Chair David Kessler, MD, JD, professor of pediatrics and of epidemiology and biostatistics, former dean of the School of Medicine and vice chancellor, and former commissioner... of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. Dr. Kessler led the FDA under the administrations of Presidents George H.W. Bush and Bill Clinton. The 2 other members of the UCSF faculty who have also been named to the 13-person Advisory Board: Eric Goosby, MD and Robert M. Rodriguez, MD. We wish Drs. Kessler, Goosby, and Rodriguez the best as they assume these critical leadership roles. They represent the extraordinary and relentless dedication the UCSF community has shown in meeting the challenge of the coronavirus across our patient care, research, and education efforts. Our public health mission has never been clearer nor pursued with greater determination. UCSF looks forward to working with President-elect Biden’s administration. We remain committed as ever to our partnership with public health officials at the national, state, and local levels.

Read All About It! Bioartificial kidney aims to mimic natural kidney function with $1 million grant from the John and Marcia Goldman Foundation The John and Marcia Goldman Foundation, a private family foundation based in San Francisco, recently granted The Kidney Project $1 million to advance its bioartificial kidney. The grant will support the development of the device’s bioreactor, which will perform essential kidney functions that dialysis treatments don’t replace. The new US News Graduate Rankings were released this morning, and our UC Berkeley - UCSF Graduate Program in Bioengineering is ranked #4 (tied with Duke, Stanford, and UCSD). This is one spot higher than last year and matches our all-time highest ranking. While rankings may fluctuate from year to year, what doesn’t change is the tremendous dedication and excellence of our students, staff, and faculty. Our thanks and congratulations to program Chair and Co-Chair Todd McDev...itt and Ian Holmes along with the rest of the Executive Committee for their strong leadership. We'd also like to thank Tejal Desai, chair of the UCSF Department of Bioengineering and Therapeutic Sciences (and now joint Berkeley BioE faculty), who has been a wonderful partner in supporting this program. And of course we wouldn’t be where we are without the care and hard work of the BioE and BTS staff, going all the way from admissions to graduation. Finally, thank you and congratulations to our current and former graduate students, who make it all possible and represent us so well! UCSF UCSF School of Medicine UCSF School of Pharmacy

Did you know? World Kidney Day is March 12, 2020. Dr. Shuvo Roy (UCSF) and Dr. William Fissell (VUMC) wrote an update regarding their ongoing conversations with the FDA about the @ArtificialKidney first planned in-human study. We are excited about their progress towards the world’s first implantable bioartificial kidney! Read more about it here: https://www.facebook.com/ArtificialKidney/ #KidneyDisease #TKP #VUMC #UCSF
