~DAILY POST~ Today’s post is about the Shrimp Plant! Justicia brandegeeana, the Mexican shrimp plant, shrimp plant or false hop, is an evergreen shrub in the genus Justicia of the acanthus family Acanthaceae, native to Mexico, and also naturalized in Florida. .It rarely grows more than 3 or 4 feet high, and about as wide. While they will grow in full sun to partial shade, growing shrimp plants where they receive morning sun is ideal. They need the sun to bring out the brighte...st colors and, yet, too much sun will cause the colors to fade too soon. They also make great indoor houseplants! If you have any questions, comments, or concerns feel free to comment, private message, or call Big Oak Nursery. Have a fantastic day! Tatum’s Tips: It’s unknown wether it is pet friendly or not so just be sure your pets don’t ingest them! Shrimp plant care should also include frequent trimming to encourage fuller growth and more bloom. Once the first bracts appear, a shrimp plant will bloom for months and then will rest for a short time before blooming again. The best time to trim and prune is when blooming begins to slow. Good luck with your Shrimp Plants! #ShrimpPlant #JusticiaBrandegeeana #Beautiful #BigOakNursery #Plants #PlantNursery #ElkGrove #InElkGrove #Sacramento #SacArea #Nursery #Plant #Garden #GardenCenter #Beautify #Floriculture #Horticulture #Maintenance #PlantCare

~DAILY POST~ Today’s post is about Cape Plumbagos! Plumbago auriculata, the cape leadwort, blue plumbago or Cape plumbago, is a species of flowering plant in the family Plumbaginaceae, native to South Africa. The specific epithet auriculata means "with ears", referring to the shape of the leaves. This Plumbago is actually a shrub and in its natural surroundings can grow 6 to 10 feet tall with a spread of 8 to 10 feet. Plumbago plants are sprawling shrubs with branches that re...semble vines. It is prized for the profusion of blue phlox-like flowers it produces for extended periods of time. It has few pests and diseases are rare. Two additional bonuses are its deer resistance and, once established, these easy growing shrubs also tolerate drought. It will grow as an evergreen shrub and makes an excellent foundation plant. It is a beautiful when planted over a stone or wood retaining wall, allowing its branches to cascade over in a waterfall of foliage and unusual blue flowersand it will bloom all year long. If you have any questions, comments, or concerns feel free to comment, private message, or call Big Oak Nursery. Have a fantastic day! Tatum’s Tips: They are pet friendly! Because of its pest and disease resistance, how to care for a plumbago is pretty basic. It blooms best in full sun, but will tolerate some shade if you are willing to sacrifice some of the bloom. As with most plants, it prefers fertile, well-drained soil, but again, it isn’t fussy. Slightly acidic, slightly alkaline, clay, sand or loam where to grow a plumbago in your zone is really a matter of where to dig the hole! These shrubs do tend to become leggy, so plumbago care does involve occasional pruning and you’ll sacrifice the bloom if you trim too often or too much. Good luck with your Cape Plumbagos! #CapePlumbago #Plumbago #Beautiful #BigOakNursery #Plants #PlantNursery #ElkGrove #InElkGrove #Sacramento #SacArea #Nursery #Plant #Garden #GardenCenter #Beautify #Floriculture #Horticulture #Maintenance #PlantCare #PetFriendly #PetFriendlyPlant

They are drought resistant. If you have any questions, comments,... or concerns feel free to comment, private message, or call Big Oak Nursery. Have a fantastic day! Tatum’s Tips: They are pet friendly! These blue Plumbagos are known as true blue for being naturally a beautiful and rare dark blue color. They reach up to 8 tall and 18 wide. ~DAILY POST~ Today’s post is about Onion Types! Onions are members of the Allium genus of flowering plants that also includes garlic, shallots, leeks and chives. These vegetables contain various vitamins, minerals and potent plant compounds that have been shown to promote health in many ways. In fact, the medicinal properties of onions have been recognized since ancient times, when they were used to treat ailments like headaches, heart disease and mouth sores. Onions are nutr...ient-dense, meaning they’re low in calories but high in vitamins and minerals. One medium onion has just 44 calories but delivers a considerable dose of vitamins, minerals and fiber. Onions contain antioxidants and compounds that fight inflammation, decrease triglycerides and reduce cholesterol levels all of which may lower heart disease risk. Onions can fight potentially dangerous bacteria. If you have any questions, comments, or concerns feel free to comment, private message, or call Big Oak Nursery. Have a fantastic day! Tatum’s Tips: These vegetables are not pet friendly and can cause serious issues if consumed in mass quantities. Eating vegetables of the Allium genus like garlic and onions has been linked to a lower risk of certain cancers, including stomach and colorectal. A review of 26 studies showed that people who consumed the highest amount of allium vegetables were 22% less likely to be diagnosed with stomach cancer than those who consumed the least amount. Eating onions may help control blood sugar, which is especially significant for people with diabetes or prediabetes. ~DAILY POST~ Today’s post is about Herbs! In general use, herbs are plants with savory or aromatic properties that are used for flavoring and garnishing food, for medicinal purposes, or for fragrances; excluding vegetables and other plants consumed for macronutrients. Culinary use typically distinguishes herbs from spices. Consuming herbs may help to prevent and manage heart disease, cancer and diabetes. It may also help to reduce blood clots and provide anti-inflammatory and... anti-tumour properties. Research is ongoing but studies have shown that: Garlic, linseed, fenugreek and lemongrass may help lower cholesterol. Herbs are rich in antioxidants, especially cloves, cinnamon, sage, oregano and thyme, by helping to reduce low-density lipoproteins (‘bad’ cholesterol). If you have any questions, comments, or concerns feel free to comment, private message, or call Big Oak Nursery. Have a superb day! Tatum’s Tips: You are only limited by your imagination with it comes to using herbs in the kitchen they can be added to virtually any recipe. They don’t always have to be added into a dish either herbs added once a dish has been served is another great way of enhancing the flavour, smell and visual appeal of your dish. For example, spaghetti Bolognese with some fresh basil leaves on top or a pumpkin or chicken dish with fresh sage leaves. With proper preparation and precaution, herbs can be safely used to support healthy pets. Although adverse reactions are rare, herbs require care and common sense. When using herbs, select the appropriate form and amount of plant matter. ~DAILY POST~ Today’s post is about Asian Vegetables! High in fiber, vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants, the Asian diet is also low in saturated and total fat. It is this combination that many health professionals believe protects against many chronic diseases, such as heart disease and cancer. The Asian diet is relatively low in meat and dairy foods. Bok choy is a vegetable high in vitamins C, A, and K. It’s also high in calcium, magnesium, potassium, manganese, and iron. I...f you’re like me and struggle to take in as many vitamins as you should in a day, you should consider adding this vegetable to your diet. It’s able to add many necessary nutrients to your diet by eating only one type of vegetable. It simplifies things. Not to mention, you can toss Bok choy raw in a salad, or you can cook it and use it as part of a stir-fry. I know what you’re thinking, Mustard greens? I thought those were supposed to be covered in bacon grease and vinegar? But in Asian cuisine, mustard greens are compiled with other heart-healthy vegetables to make a quick and easy stir-fry. If you have any questions, comments, or concerns feel free to comment, private message, or call Big Oak Nursery. Have an awesome day! Tatum’s Tips: The next time you’re in a rush to get food on the table, consider tossing mustard greens and other veggies from the fridge in a large pan. Sauté them and include a protein for a well rounded and fast meal. Leafy greens are great for dogs. Leafy greens are nutrient-rich and we have noticed that when added regularly to a dog's diet, they are much less likely to search out grass to eat. ~DAILY POST~ Today’s post is about Cruciferous (flower head) Vegetables! Cruciferous vegetables are vegetables of the family Brassicaceae with many genera, species, and cultivars being raised for food production such as cauliflower, cabbage, kale, garden cress, bok choy, broccoli, Brussels sprouts, and similar green leaf vegetables. Most cruciferous vegetables are rich in vitamins and minerals such as folate and vitamin K. Dark green cruciferous veggies also are a source of v...itamins A and C and contain phytonutrients plant-based compounds that may help to lower inflammation and reduce the risk of developing cancer. A benefit of cabbage is that it can be fermented and turned into sauerkraut, which provides numerous health benefits, such as improving your digestion and supporting your immune system, it may even aid weight loss. Cauliflower is a versatile veggie that is delicious in many ways beyond steaming. Try roasting florets or steaks of cauliflower to release its pleasant flavor. When pureed, it’s a great substitute to cream sauce. Other creative cauliflower options? Mash into a pizza crust, grate it into a substitute for rice or pickle it for a low-calorie salty, crunchy snack. If you have any questions, comments, or concerns feel free to comment, private message, or call Big Oak Nursery. Have an awesome day! Tatum’s Tips: The following vegetables are suitable for your dog or cat to eat. Consider steaming or boiling cruciferous veggies such as broccoli, cauliflower, and cabbage, as they are much easier to digest when cooked. Do you hate to eat Brussel sprouts? Boy oh boy do I have a delicious and easy way to cook them that will make you want Brussel sprouts everyday! Brussels sprouts practically beg to be in the oven. For a melt-in-your-mouth side, roast and toss with something sweet, such as dried fruit or maple syrup, as well as something savory anything from Parmesan cheese to sliced olives. Go on and give it a try, you won’t be sorry! Broccoli can be eaten raw in salads or with dip as a quick snack. Try steaming it and topping it with shredded cheese or roasting it in the oven with olive oil, salt, and pepper. Or, try this parmesan cheesy broccoli casserole with crispy breadcrumbs if you don’t love the taste of broccoli. ~DAILY POST~ Today’s post is about Leafy Green Vegetables! Leafy green vegetables are an important part of a healthy diet. They're packed with vitamins, minerals and fiber but low in calories. Eating a diet rich in leafy greens can offer numerous health benefits including reduced risk of obesity, heart disease, high blood pressure and mental decline. Kale is considered one of the most nutrient-dense vegetables on the planet due to its many vitamins, minerals and antioxidants.... Spinach is a popular leafy green vegetable and is easily incorporated into a variety of dishes, including soups, sauces, smoothies and salads. Its nutrient profile is impressive with one cup (30 grams) of raw spinach providing 181% of the DV for vitamin K, 56% of the DV for vitamin A and 13% of the DV for manganese (9). It’s also packed with folate, which plays a key role in red blood cell production and the prevention of neural tube defects in pregnancy. Romaine lettuce is a common leafy vegetable with sturdy, dark leaves with a firm center rib. It has a crunchy texture and is a popular lettuce, particularly in Caesar salads. It’s a good source of vitamins A and K, with one cup (47 grams) providing 82% and 60% of the DVs for these vitamins respectively (24). What’s more, research in rats showed that lettuce improved their levels of blood lipids, potentially reducing the risk of heart disease. Further studies need to investigate these benefits in people. If you have any questions, comments, or concerns feel free to comment, private message, or call Big Oak Nursery. Have an amazing day! Tatum’s Tips: To benefit most from all that kale has to offer, it’s best consumed raw since cooking can reduce its nutrient profile. One study on the neural tube defect spina bifida found that one of the most preventable risk factors for this condition was a low intake of folate during the first trimester of pregnancy; so along with taking a prenatal vitamin, eating spinach is a great way to increase your folate intake during pregnancy. Lettuce, spinach, chard, and kale are all okay for dogs. Besides being rich in vitamins A, C, and K, calcium, iron and potassium, leafy greens are also a good source of fiber. The high fiber in leafy greens can cause some dogs to have an upset stomach after initially added to their diet.
