TIME FOR THE TURKEY TROT Long Beach champion Justin Rudd has spearheaded a marathon called the Turkey Trot for seventeen years raising money and awareness for a variety of Long Beach charities. This year marks the 18th Annual Turkey Trot, andwait for it-- IT’S VIRTUAL! You can run, walk, bike, skate, or wheel the distance you like (1-mile, 5K, 10K) on Thanksgiving day, week, or weekend. And you can participate from any location, even on your treadmill or stationary bike. Yo...u choose the start and finish time to boot! This fun event supports beach clean-ups, an elementary school spelling bee, donations for local food banks, and more. So if you’d like to get your community activism mojo on, and work off that stuffing and pie before it hits your hips, visit www.justinrudd.com/turkertrot.

How are you doing? How’s your family? Those two questions that used to be nothing more than idle salutations now resonate with deep meaning. We have so much for which to be thankful, this year more than most. And if you are lucky enough to have dodged the slings and arrows of outrageous fortune, i.e., layoffs, sickness, fires, civil unrest, and murder hornets, well, maybe you can find it in your heart to give back a little sum-sum this November to your neighbors in need. Ever...y year, the Long Beach Basket Brigade, a volunteer organization comprised of businesses, churches, schools, and the folks next door, build and deliver baskets of Thanksgiving fixin’s to underprivileged families. Champions that they are, they will be masking up, disinfecting their hands, and sharing that holiday happiness again this yearCovid-Schmovid. They already have enough volunteers to collect, arrange, and distribute the baskets, but your donations continue to be welcome and necessary to keep this well-oiled love machine producing the goods. Formed in 2005 by a small group of individuals who wanted to make a difference, they raised $2,000 and delivered 50 baskets. Last year, that number had grown to nearly 1,5000 baskets. Yeah, baby. That’s how we do it in the LB. So if you’re thinking you’d like to donate some food or moola toward this most honorable endeavor, call them today and get your feel good on. And tell your friends about the Basket Brigade! By doing so, you directly impact the number of baskets assembled and the number of lives touched by your kindness. Call 562.758.7057 or visit the website at www.longbeachbasketbrigade.org and hit the donate tab at the top.

SPIRITS WILL NOT BE IGNORED! Last October, we jokingly warned you of an impending zombie apocalypse. Sorry. We could not have imagined it would actually happen. Anyway, although much has changed, there are still plenty of ways to celebrate Halloween. First, make a Zombie.... Dress in costume and Zoom your friends. Bully them into dressing up, too. Then parade around in front of the camera talking as if what you’re saying is the point rather than showing off your costume. But you’re totally showing off your costume. Make sugar skulls! There are a bazillion YouTube videos that will instruct you on how to do this, and other videos that provide recipes for sugar skull cakeswhich you eatwhich is probably the way to go. Watch scary movies. WARNING: Do not start googling options on Halloween; do it before the big day. Carve a pumpkin. Just do it. Eat candy! Just because the kids can’t trick-or-treat doesn’t mean you can’t buy bags of chocolate eyeballs and mini Snickers, fill the plastic pumpkin with all of it, and dive in. You know, like you do every year after saying, Huh, we must have over-estimated how many kids would come by. And start the evening (before it gets dark) by swinging by Berth 55. Order up an uncomfortable amount of shrimp tacos, fish skewers, fries, and chowder, then scurry home and settle in for, well, perhaps the very best Halloween you’ve ever had.

WASH YOUR HANDS AND HELP AT-RISK COMMUNITY As more and more businesses reopen, hand sanitizer becomes an even more crucial component in fighting the war against COVID-19. What if you could find a hand sanitizer that killed 99.99% of common germs, support a local company here in the LB, and help the homeless all at the same time? You know we’re about to tell you that now you can.... Taking in the fresh demands placed on everyone as we navigate this pandemic, F&L Racing Fuel has shifted gears and is now selling just such a hand sanitizer. F&L Petroleum Products has been powering military and industrial customers for almost thirty years. We think it’s awesome that they’ve turned their attention toward taking on the matter at hand. F&L Racing Fuels Hand Sanitizer is available in 2oz for on the go, 8oz for home and business, and by the gallon for making those refills quick and easy. Boom! They’ve got you! AND for every bottle sold, F&L is donating the gross profits to local homeless shelters to help support one of our most vulnerable communities. With their sales, F&L has raised over $40,000 so far, and in their first two weeks were able to donate their first check for $15,000 to our friends at the Long Beach Rescue Mission at the end of April. Here’s the deal, you know you need hand sanitizer. Why not get the best, support a bitchin’ Long Beach company, and do some community good while you’re at it? Here’s how Call: 562.216.8383 E: [email protected] And visit the site: milspecproducts.com/Products/handsanitizer

Let’s spend this 4th of July together, right here at Berth 55. Corral the cousins and sibs, grandfolks and kids, and grab a picnic table outside overlooking the harbor while reveling in a yummy ocean breezejust like in the good ol' days! Yes, you need your mask, and yes, you need to be cool about social distancing, but now you can distance yourself here with us, and we love that. Of course, you can, swing by and pick up a wonderful seafood extravaganza to bring home to your... family. And, absolutely, you can still find us on Grubhub, Postmates, and DoorDash. But we are so happy to add another option to that list. Just come over. Let us cook you something truly Yankee Doodle Dandy this 4th of July. Welcome back, babies. Happy Independence Day!
