The Begovich Gallery, in partnership with Grand Central Art Center and MUZEO, proudly presents WILLIAM CAMARGO: Origins and Displacements, Vols. 1 & 2. On view October 3-December 31 @billythecamera... Origins and Displacements is an on-going body of work examining Orange County’s history through contemporary photographs, videos, and performance produced by artist William Camargo. This two-part exhibition features Camargo’s artistic investigation that challenges the social depiction and erasure of Chicanx/Latinx people in historical documents, photographs, and news archives while recounting issues related to gentrification, systematic racism, and police brutality. Essay accompanying the exhibition written by Joseph Daniel Valencia, Independent Curator, Exhibitions and Programs Manager, Vincent Price Museum (VPAM). @hooligandisco . . Welcome to the premiere of IMPACT: 50 Years of Exhibitions - This year marks 50 years of exhibitions produced at CSUF. Highlights from the gallery’s archive of exhibition materials and ephemera will be presented weekly via IG during #ThrowbackThursdays We will open this series with one of the first exhibitions mounted in the Main Art Gallery (which would later become the Nicholas & Lee Begovich Gallery in 2009). It featured new works by Lloyd Hamrol and Judy Gerowitz (aka J...udy Chicago). Known for his site-specific installations, Hamrol’s work is minimal and monumental in form. It is also functional where people could sit, lean, climb or rest on. Hamrol’s exhibition at CSUF was followed by a project funded by the National Endowment for the Arts (Art in Public Places), entitled Redoubling Wallpath, (1972). It was composed of nearly 1000 burlap bags filled with earth and cement. The installation since deteriorated and today Redoubling Wallpath stands like other monuments of the past. In 1970, professor and gallery director, Dextra Frankel featured the work of Judy Gerowitz entitled, Three Atmospheres. The piece was an installation consisting of smoke canisters on top of numerous University buildings, detonating into flumes across campus. This exhibition was one of historical significance at CSUF, along with an ad featured in Artforum announcing that the artist would no longer use her married name. The ad read: Judy Gerowitz hereby divests herself of all names imposed upon her through social male dominance and freely chooses her own name: Judy Chicago. . . #therestishistory #feminism . . 1) Detail of promotion material for Hamrol and Chicago’s exhibitions 2) Hamrol/Chicago promotion material, full view 3-4) Hamrol’s Redoubling Wall Path 5-7) The Daily Titan’s coverage of Three Atmospheres . . #ThrowbackThursdays #IMPACTonART #IMPACT50yearsofexhibitions #csuf #csufcota #begovichgallery #judychicago #lloydhamrol @csufcota @csufcreativephoto @csuf_artdept @csufsculpture @csufgraphicdesign @csuf_painting @csuf_visualarts_grads
