Probably one of the coolest #jobsite photos we've taken with all the action going on. This photo was taken at a #treeservice firm's service yard in #sanjose -- its such a great example of how #urbanwood is sourced and manufactured. In the foreground, a #skidsteer with fork attachments is loading our trailer with #BayAreaRedwood slabs.... In the middle of the photo frame, is a #semitruck being loaded by a #skiploader also known as a #bucketloader #frontloader #frontendloader #payloader #wheelloader and of course just a #loader -- the #construction industry is very creative with names... that's why our barn cat is named Kitty after all . Back to learning though, now you're probably curious what is being loaded. Well typically when an #urbantree is removed in a city it is often chipped onsite and hauled back to a service yard like this as a staging ground. Then the loader loads bigger #semitrucks at which point it enters the #wastestream -- best case scenario sees it recycled. With this knowledge, the background of the photo will now make sense. The back left pile is the mulch from the smaller trees that were mulched onsite and dumped by smaller #dumptrucks in the yard (which get loaded by the loader). The back right of the photo are larger urban trees taken down with cranes and at some point the pile grow so large they will grind it and start a new. We were able to work with this tree service firm to divert about 20 logs from entering the waste stream over 2 days of milling! 10 of these were walnut logs for the @purplemuseum aka the San Jose Children's Discovery Museum! We've talked a bit about the #science of wood this week, so why not continue it? Today is actually about #weatherpatterns that are a function of the seasonal movement of the #jetstream in the #greatbasin states. This lesson has multiple applications -- how #urbantrees come down in #windstorms to #wildfire hazard from uncontrollable wind, and even curing timber!... First, we live in a world that is constantly changing -- science is a tool we use to predict future change -- this is based off input parameters we can measure like #pressure #temperature #humidity #dewpoint and other properties. Today we're going to talk about what is called a #pressuregradient -- a gradient is simply a differential between two points. For example, if you heat a cast iron pan and the bottom gets got, it propagates to the handle and you need a cover on it so you don't burn yourself -- this is an example of a temperature gradient moving from the "hot" pan to the "cold" handle -- gradients always moving from high to low. Back to pressure, this is a measurement of force divided by an area -- that's hard to imagine but basically it is how much force air exerts on things in a given region of the planet. Right now there is a whole bunch of high pressure in the great basin states caused by the jet stream and there is low pressure on the coast of California. There is currently a huge pressure difference between San Francisco and Winnemucca (how meteorologists are predicting this event). The high pressure wants to come down to meet the lower pressure -- to do this it is coming over the #sierranevadamountains passing through the central valley, then funneling through all the valleys and canyons of the #californiacoastalrange where it gains even more speed. Each time the air moves through these different climates, the properties of the air change (see graphic by @sfchronicle and @noaa ) and by the time it reaches the #BayArea we have very warm and dry air that is moving at high speeds. This uncharacteristically high wind can cause trees to toppel over which often are near power lines. This is exactly what has caused so many fires and why so many urban trees continue to be removed...

Science is a tool humanity has learned to explain the unexplained -- its very essence is the search for truth. It has been a while since we've talked about some cool #woodstuff so here is a bleeding #BayAreaRedwood log. Okay that's not really true, its leaking pitch aka resin -- which is only present in #conifer trees aka #evergreentrees like #redwoodtrees... Now most people think sap and resin(pitch) are the same -- they aren't. If you'd like to learn more below in a link that explains it pretty well. https://sciencing.com/difference-between-tree-sap-tree-resi We're going to talk about resin which is that thick goey super sticky substance kind of like honey -- if you've ever got #pineresin or #cedarresin on your hands you know what we're talking about So this tree was cut for like a month or two and only started leaking -- so what gives? Well, it was growing in the #bayarea aka the #haywardhills and was felled there. We then took it 20 miles east into the #trivalley where there is a very different temperature and humidity profile -- the resin was no longer stable inside the wood. At the higher temperature and lower humidity here in the #livermorevalley, the equilibrium shifted such that the log now needed to excrete the resin to reach its new state of stability. Wood is a perfect example of #compositematerials that nature creates from biological systems (so it also fits into a class known as #biomaterials ) -- as a result it is always living and reacting with the environment. Now you're probably wondering, what is a composite material? It is a material made up of several components -- like a lignin + resin + a lot of other tree stuff -- you'll have to Google that one to learn more. Here at #BayAreaRedwood we love nature and how it is always adapting and changing. This #redwoodslab tells a unique story -- just like 2018 vintage #wenteartistserieswinelabel that pair #artistry with #winemaking here in @livermorevalleywinecountry Do you notice the 2 pieces of wood that are "inlaid" to the left of the @wente #vineyards bottle?... Well we didn't actually put those in there... that was the original #redwood #treestake holding the tree straight for it to grow -- which the tree then grew around. When this #redwoodtree grew around the tree stakes, it caused internal stress -- imagine eating something you shouldn't -- like a nail. Consequently this stress caused what is referred to as "compression" in industry jargon which yields this explosion of character. Think of when you crinkle a piece of paper and it leaves crease marks. This is probably one of the most unique slabs we've made because of the story it told about the tree. In fact, this defect ultimately lead to #heartrot which required this tree to come down -- previously we've done a few posts on it. Challenge: if you can find the previous posts and DM us we'll give a $50 credit towards material or a free 12" charcuterie board. We are strong advocates for reasoning and problem solving; this is why we created the challenge above (though its more like a scavenger hunt) This photo is not high enough resolution, but if you were to inspect it by eye you would see the tight rings characteristics of the #oldgrowthredwood used back in the day. Please look into what organizations like @savetheredwoods and @sempervirensfund are doing preserving our #redwoodforests for generations to come. This article by the @sfchronicle gives insight to the regeneration happening in the forest right now as I type this. Recently the extremely high intensity #czufire tore through #bigbasinstatepark -- this type of conflagration is known as a #megafire -- or what we know as "bad fire." In contrast to bad fire, are "good fires" which a...re routine low-intensity fires that were common when the #Ohlone people lived here on their native land. These small (good) fires are slow burning and cleared the brush on the ground known as fuel. Due to poor #forestry policy trying to sequester every fire (good or bad), we have let nearly a century of fuel accumulate on the ground which enables these mega fires. As a society we conquered fires in cities and we thought we could do this to #mothernature as well -- now due to climate change with uncharacteristic #heatwaves , #windstorms , and #lightningstorms the fires are becoming unstoppable. Onto climate change, it turns out we have a great solution -- a #redwoodforest -- #redwoodtrees are magnificent creatures that can live for thousands of years and sequester more and more carbon every day they are live. Consider donating to the #BigBasinRecoveryFund which is a joint effort between #savetheredwoods and #sempervirensfund -- they are working to preserve and rebuild this national treasure for generations to come. Have you ever wondered what #clearcutting looks like? Here is an #urbanforest in the #fivecanyons neighborhood that was totally decimated by @pacificgasandelectric in the #fairviewfireprotectiondistrict back in the summer of 2019 -- this is not okay. This was done in the name of #fireprotection but cutting down #coastliveoaks and #baylaurels that will never grow as tall as the #transmissionlines and are hundreds of feet away is not necessary. ... Not only is it not necessary, but it violates the Fairview Specific Plan which states that "Oak woodlands shall be preserved" -- this #riparianzone was obliterated. Furthermore, the Plan also notes that for every non-native #bluegumeucalyptus removed (the tall trees in the back of the photo) that (5) native trees should be planted. Obviously this was not the case. There have been no new tree plantings in the #FairviewDistrict. Just trees that were mulched in place -- other locations being on East Avenue and Campus Drive. A year later the #woodchips are still there and the debris is draining down into this canyon. We need smarter and more effective policy, that is why our founder @nharvey92 is running for District Director of the Fairview Fire Protection District (FFPD). Nick's mission is to prevent needless devastation like this and hold institutions accountable to #reforest the environment. Complacency is not okay in the name of #firesafety -- this destruction is as result of a lack of oversight from FFPD and the #AlamedaCounty Planning Department When trees need to be removed, a #treerecycling program should be implemented seeing this material turned into #urbanwood which is a key component of sustainable #urbanforestry plans. We ask for your support bringing attention to needless #urbandeforestation that does not need to happen. It is a waste of our resources, is terrible for our environment, and most importantly is not protecting anyone -- except PG&E's balance sheet. We're stoked to announce a partnership with @jwpwood #deconstructing 8 #shearwalls full of #oldgrowthredwood in a warehouse in the #bayviewdistrict of #sanfrancisco -- this will be a multi-part series. Okay so that's a lot of jargon and yall probably wonder what a lot of that stuff means, so we'll break it down for you here. #punintended Joseph at #jwpwood isn't just good at a lot of things, he's great -- in fact he is one of the #subcontractors we rely on to produce high qu...ality #BayAreaRedwood products for our customers. Joseph saw us posting about this project on our stories and asked if we needed a crew -- a week later we had mobilized and started the #deconstruction project. Deconstruction differs from #demolition in that the materials are carefully taken apart to be reused. Often it is cheaper to bring in an #excavator to "demo something" but this totally destroys the materials and creates garbage which enters the waste stream. What's so special about this material you're wondering? Well #oldgrowth #redwood is from trees that should not have been harvested in the first place -- today we have organizations like @savetheredwoods and @sempervirensfund who are fighting to protect #redwoodforests for generations to come. This material is highly prized for its #tightgrain patterns and rich red color which is not a common (natural) wood color. Furthermore, it is extremely resistant to rot and decay making it an amazing investment for the longevity of structures. Now here's what is even more interesting -- this material is coming from the historic @hornblowercablecars warehouse -- those are the cool trolleys on wheels you see around San Francisco. We learned this after we started the project -- does @bayarearedwood get any more authentic than this? We're grateful for all our partners who work with us to @stopwaste throughout the #bayarea and believe in our mission to #sustainablysource timber products.
