Julie Fleming’s show entitled Pandemic Paintings is the feature at the Bakersfield Art Center for the month of February 2021. Bakersfield Art Center is located at 1607 19th Street. The Bakersfield Art Assn. Website has images of artwork from many of the artist who currently hang in the gallery. Bakersfieldartassociation.org Contact information: ... (661) 345-3074, [email protected] Julie Parke Fleming’s Biography I have always drawn and started painting when I was 14. I am self-taught and have worked in oils, acrylics and watercolors as well as pencil and pen and Ink. I find that each medium has its challenges and rewards. I taught elementary art for 20 years and probably learned more than the children with the biggest take away being their ability to go with their instincts. Art is about personal expression and one has to be fearless to go down that road. I became a member of the BAA after retiring from teaching and love the inspiration and creativity of the group. I currently teach classes at the BAA while developing my own art work. The work in this show was started in the spring during our first pandemic lockdown. It seemed to be easier to create from my mind at that time than to look at the world and paint what was in front of me.

Susan can be reached at (661) 706-3936 Susan McQuerrey, a California native, was raised in Sacramento., earned her B.A. in modern languages from the University of the Pacific in Stockton. She also enrolled in Covell College, inside Pacific. It offered general education classes taught in Spanish by professors from Peru, Columbia and ...Mexico. In her junior year, a scholar- ship from NYU allowed her to travel to Spain where she attended Madrid University and lived with a Spanish family. She took a variety of classes, one at the Prado Museum. Studying the remarkable paint- ings of the masters, her love of art began. She re- turned to Pacific for her senior year and graduated, meeting her husband, Michael, in the University choir and marrying soon after. Susan took credential classes while teaching multiple subjects as an elementary school teacher in 1968, in Lodi. Later the family moved to Bakersfield where she taught 6th grade in Shafter. Her daughter was born in 1975 and Susan stayed home. During these years she began painting on her own using wa- tercolor. Later she earned an M.A. in English at CSUB. Then she began her second career as a pro- fessor at Bakersfield College. When she retired she could freely devote time to art classes. The more I learned, the more I wanted to use water- color, she says, The medium al- lows for so much; repre- sentational, fluid, soft, planned or spontaneous approaches. Of course, there are challenges with a medium that does not allow one to paint over mis- takes. She cites, It’s almost always better to chuck than to fix. But starting over on a painting doesn’t usually discourage me she says. See more
