Avila Beach Paddlesports

I was sitting in the shop today (Thursday) and about 9am I heard a large noise that sounded like rushing water so I got up and looked out the entrance to Avila Beach Paddlesports! There had been a huge wave that had about two feet of water that went all the way around the building. Actually a lot of water entered into the door. Wow! The Mermaid Market double barricade and sandbags really held so that was a bonus. Buts you never know when that will happen. Even though I have... seen the water much higher no storm with this much energy should taken without precaution. Can’t wait for tomorrow!

Mermaid Market is open for coffee and snacks etc until the water goes all the around the building!

As most know we have been in business since 2010 working in the Port San Luis for 11 years going on to our 12th. One of our first and foremost responsibilities is our customers enjoyment and safety on the water. During this time of year, there is a significant amount of sand buildup at the dock area. With the extremely large swells and waves this year a lot of sand has come in which makes launching difficult for some when the tide drops. Most of our customers really enjoy g...oing to the Point San Luis Lighthouse. That means they have to get to the beach from the water as well as launch themselves safely from that beach. This is without our assistance and guidance. There are some safety risks associated with this. We are an ‘open ocean’ harbor. We have swells that even though they are significantly cut down to by our breakwater, when waves get really large the beaches and dock get difficult to negotiate and pose a safety risk for us as a company. As most know, many people come to us because we are so family friendly. This means many people like to paddle in Avila with children and it’s so ‘beginner friendly’. We love it! With that being said, we have operated here with very little mishaps because we actually either cut off rentals or close the program entirely. So, even though it’s ‘sunny’ and warm we have to make decisions based on our assessment of public safety risks. We are truly sorry for any inconvenience this may cause our awesome paddlers but we feel as if this is and should be our decision. We just want all to have a great experience paddling here.
