HAPPY INTERNATIONAL WOMEN'S MONTH In the history of the US since its inception, women have made tremendous strides forward in our rights to vote, and to earn a living wage (let alone work outside the home). Women of color have had a particularly hard row to hoe not only in the fight for the right to vote, but in job equity within the mainstream white working class.... In honor of International Women's Month, we offer a flash back to our 2020 Women’s Month exhibition, Mujer = Rights. "Present" by Yaneli Delgado. Stay tuned for upcoming exhibitions If you haven't had the chance to see previous exhibitions visit our website at- http://avenue50studio.org/. We also have ALL Art Hour interviews posted on are YouTube Channel.

#Repost @pppsgv with @make_repost HLP MURAL WINNER ANNOUNCEMENT PPPSGV is incredibly honored to have Ernesto and Sandra De La Loza display their beautiful artwork at our health center. The Highland Park community has a rich tradition of mural art that deeply connects to its proud culture and history. Rapid gentrification has pushed out many long-term residents, which has resulted in the erasure of historic murals that connected the Highland Park Latinx community to its... past. "Earth Mother" will be de la Loza's first mural in Highland Park, a neighborhood that was once the epicenter of the artistic Chicano movement that De La Loza himself helped popularize. Check out an article in the @blvdsentinel, a local Highland Park newspaper to learn more about the artist and selection process! (Link in bio)

Thank you for joining us on Friday night for our artist talk with Salina Canizales! If you missed it, you can watch the full talk on our YouTube Channel at YouTube.com/Avenue50StudioInc. Please SUBSCRIBE to our channel & ‘like’ our video! Photographer, Salina Canizales, is often found exploring the streets of Los Angeles on foot with her camera. Always drawn to the art of photography, it wasn’t until she moved back to Los Angeles as an adult that she began to start doc...umenting her view of life in the city. Canizales grew up in Eugene, Oregon where she developed her love of storytelling through writing. Upon her move to Los Angeles, the city and its culture were her biggest inspiration to continue telling stories, but through photography. With a primary focus on documenting Latino culture, most of her work would be categorized a s street photography and portraiture. While Los Angeles was her initial inspiration, Canizales continues to travel throughout Latin America, documenting the people and culture unique to each place she visits. Check out Salina’s work in our ‘THESE DAZE’ online exhibition, curated by Ramon Ramirez! ¡Presente!- A Homage to Author Rudolfo Anaya Rudolfo Anaya, 10/30/37-6/28/20, godfather of Chicano literature wrote his first novel Bless Me, Ultima, published 1972. A native of New Mexico, Anaya wrote about Aztlan and the people who inhabited the small towns in and around his birthplace.... Bless me Ultima is a book infused with mysticism, and violence directed towards people some don’t understand. Justice is one important theme. What is justice, who rightfully decides what is just, and who do we turn to for guidance regarding eternal justice. Anaya questions if God is in the heavens in the form of a man who punishes and/or forgives. Or is God in the natural world around us, in those who choose to understand its power and beauty, like the curandera Ultima. Avenue 50 Studio invited the following artists to speak to these significant universal themes Anaya chose to tackle in his book: Cidne Hart, David Martinez, Elmer Guevarra, Gwen Freeman, Ilya Navarrete, Isabel Martinez, John Idelfonso, Karen Duckles, Raoul De la Sota, Rebecca Nabarrete, Ruth DiNicola, and Sergio Teran Deep River The Deep River piece came from the serenity of the Ultima character and her depth of knowledge of unseen powerful forces that some are naturally able to access. I feel a warm kinship with Anaya’s 9-year old protagonist in Bless Me Ultima because of my identical 9-year old issues with the Church and original sin and my pull toward pantheism and the mysteries of the natural world. -Ruth Dinicola VIRTUAL & GALLERY EXHIBITION NOW ON VIEW through November 27, 2020 Gallery visits by appointment only. Please call 323/258-1435 to make an appointment, to visit the gallery.

IN AND AROUND NELA Presented by The Arroyo Arts Collective, Works by Natalie Fratino I had two agendas creating this body of work. First of all, I wanted to showcase little pieces of NELA. This work shows just ordinary life in our area with ordinary people, and ordinary landscapes during these extraordinary times. My second agenda is that I wanted to make affordable artwork. I’m a big believer in having original pieces in your home but I know that sometimes it is nea...rly impossible to justify spending big dollars when times are tough. Heck, even when times aren’t as tough, it’s difficult. All the pieces in this show are less than $200, with many being in the $150 price range. I hope that this helps bring color into homes and inspires others to share their work with those truly in need of beauty. -Natalie Fratino (Click the link in our bio to find out more information) On view virtually at avenue50studio.org or by appointment only.
