The Civil Rights Act of 1964, which ended segregation in public places and banned employment discrimination on the basis of race, color, religion, sex or national origin, is considered one of the crowning legislative achievements of the civil rights movement. First proposed by President John F. Kennedy, it survived strong opposition from southern members of Congress and was then signed into law by Kennedy’s successor, Lyndon B. Johnson. In subsequent years, Congress expanded the act and passed additional civil rights legislation such as the Voting Rights Act of 1965.

Today we celebrate legendary American singer and civil rights activist, Nina Simone. I had spent many years pursuing excellence, because that is what classical music is all about Now it was dedicated to freedom, and that was far more important. -Nina Simone

They dressed in pajamas while enjoying popcorn and hot cocoa to celebrate the last of school before winter break. Of course, teacher Jaime Lynch did this all online with her first graders. The Sutter Elementary teacher wanted to keep the holiday tradition going despite distance learning, and it turned out to be a hit for her and her fellow 1st-grade teachers. The educators prepped the goodie bags with instructions for the morning activity, which also included watching How... the Grinch Stole Christmas and picking their favorite character from the Gingerbread stories read earlier in the week. Mrs. Lynch said it was fun and gave big kudos to my awesome families for having the popcorn and hot cocoa ready at 10:00 sharp. #WeAreAUSD See more

The Libbey Family Fund for Education has enjoyed this season of giving. The non-profit group has donated six new lap tops to area students - three from the Antioch Unified School District. The Dell computers were donated to Mark Libbey (president) from his sister, Ashley Farinha. The deserving AUSD recipients were Michael Meek from Dallas Ranch Middle, Ravenne Oca from Antioch High and Daniel Pellerin from Antioch Middle. All were surprised and thrilled with the gift. Lib...bey board members contact administration from various schools to choose a student who should be acknowledged for their strong work ethic, their positive relationships with staff and students, and their ability to cope and manage the difficulties in their life, Libbey said. Our board feels honored and humbled to be of service to the students and families in East County, especially in challenging times like these. It's a privilege to deliver these generously donated laptops into the hands of such wonderful students. AMS Principal Lindsay Wisely was grateful to the Libbey group for helping local students. Mark Libbey and wife Kathi Libbey are also teachers with the AUSD. #WeAreAUSD See more

With the first quarter of school about three weeks away, Principal Wisely has made a big effort to connect with AMS students challenged by the distance learning... model. Wisely, VP Taynesha LaBeaux and counselor Jennifer Covarrubias have visited more than 20 households this week to help students log on properly and guide them through the check-in process to ensure they are being accounted for and attending all classes. It was nice to see some of our students and to help them get back on track, Wisely said. #WatchUsSoar See more
