ZDNet posted a great overview of the machine learning research we recently conducted with Carnegie Mellon University. "The report shows how current solutions cannot address issues on the data plane, and why in the future gaining visibility into the characteristics of data usage will be paramount. Because of the vast amount of data flowing across telecoms networks, big data analytics capabilities and the ability to analyze these using advanced machine learning are essential." http://www.zdnet.com//why-machine-learning-is-the-latest-/

This week on #FraudFriday, we focus on Wangiri. In Japanese wan means one and giri means hangup. This type of fraud, also known as one ring and cut, involves calling thousands of mobile phone users from a premium rate number, letting the call ring once, then hanging up. The goal is to get the unsuspecting victims to call the number back. The profitability of this fraud is further enhanced by tricks to keep the caller on the line as long as possible, such as playing a recording that sounds as if the phone is still ringing. https://www.argyledata.com/blog/fraudfriday-wangiri/

Argyle Data recently completed a joint research paper with Carnegie Mellon University Silicon Valley, Real-time Anomaly Detection in Streaming Cellular Network Data, that outlines our unique approach to machine learning. The paper is important because it describes substantial advances in the methods and capabilities of machine learning in a business context. On Tuesday, October 25, at 12 p.m. CST one of the paper’s authors, Dr. Ole Mengshoel of CMU, and Argyle Data’s Padraig Stapleton will be guests on a radio show focused on emerging tech matters: The Voice of IoT, www.peggysmedleyshow.com, wsRadio.xom. Please listen in if you can, or check back later for a link to the recorded podcast.

Time for #FraudFriday. This week's we're focusing on international revenue share fraud (IRSF), which is a major type of fraud where scammers set up an international revenue share line and direct calls in various ways toward the number to get a portion of the revenue from the call. IRSF can be committed domestically or, more commonly, while roaming. Certain countries have particularly high interconnection fees and are a focus for IRSF. https://www.argyledata.com/blog/fraudfriday-irsf/

Globally, industries are scrambling to turn big data into actionable insight that humans can easily interpret. By far the most promising answer to this problem is the use of machine learning, or artificial intelligence (AI). Analysts are expecting the uses of AI in medical diagnosis, finance, telecommunications and many other contexts to soar. Argyle Data has pioneered new machine learning approaches, focusing on mobile fraud analysis and prevention as the initial applications. https://www.argyledata.com//turning-ai-opportunity-machin/

(V)PBX hacking involves compromising/hacking a PBX system with the intent to use it to make an excessive number of calls. PBX hacking is a natural partner to international revenue share fraud or premium rate service fraud. https://www.argyledata.com/blog/fraudfriday-vpbx-hacking/
