In what was, for so many and so often, a no-good, very bad 2020, there were silver linings in the world of arts and culture, and for young people who courageously shared their visions tor a brighter 2021. Big thanks to Karla Peterson SDUT for recalling our interview from the spring, to lift up our organization’s work and countless others in her year-end column. #Repost @thefrontarteculture Our SD Promise Neighborhood partner in San Ysidro honored BLM this year in their Day of the Dead altar. *Día de Muertos*... Altars exist in many cultures throughout the diaspora and a broad spectrum of traditions have unique altar building practices. If building an altar resonates with your culture and expression, an altar can be a visual reminder of ancestors, Spirit, God or whatever we call that which is bigger than us. Altars can provide a place to reground and reconnect to our lineage and purpose. This altar was created by Casa Familiar staff to commemorate and honor Black life. The following words were spoken by Cara Hagan on June 5th, 2020 and we want to thank her for her words -- I ask that you remember that ritual is more than performance. It is both spiritual balm and an act of defiance. In this short time together, we will denounce Black death and SAY THEIR NAMES. We will lift them up with light and prayer and song. We will fight for them, and fight for each other. Ceremony has been and will always be a vehicle for grief during challenging times. George Floyd, murdered on May 25th, whose death marks the ignition of a world-wide fight for Black Lives; Tony McDade, murdered on May 27th; Breonna Taylor, on what would have been her 27th birthday, murdered on March 13th; Ahmaud Arbery, murdered on February 23rd; and a host of Black lives lost to anti-Black racism. In our time together I hope we can begin to confront the profound sadness that is the loss of a son, a brother, a cousin, a father, a friend. A mother, a sister, a daughter, a mentor, a lover, a colleague, a familiar face, a piece of one’s community. None of the aforementioned were all of these things. But they were each some of these things and it should be acknowledged that any one of these things, lost to anyone, is sorrow. It is likely that no one here today knew George Floyd Personally. It is likely that no one reading this knew Breonna Taylor, Tony McDade, or Ahmaud Arbery, personally. What is more likely though, is that you know something about their lived experiences. You are a runner. You go to bed each night, with the expectation that you will sleep

Today is the day! Join us at Kimball park, located right behind ARTS at 4pm! ARTS will be hosting a performance on Saturday, Oct. 24 at 4pm in partnership with @blindspotco. Good Trouble is a performance experience designed to inspire and embody Beloved Community, an idea that Dr. MLK Jr. developed many years ago to invite humanity into understanding, redeeming goodwill for all overflowing love that is purely spontaneous, unmotivated, groundless and creative. ... Good Trouble is an audio play with music, poetry, verbatim dialogue, and audience participation. The title is a term we borrowed from the late John Lewis, a leader in the movement of love in action and civil disobedience. This world premiere theatrical event uses the exact words of Gen Z community organizers to explore how youth activism is changing the landscape of our nation. The audio stream will be available during free in-person events in San Diego County parks between October 17- November 1, 2020.
