Update on COVID-19 and building closure: The county have advised us that the building is closed until further notice. We had been hoping to return April 6 but obviously that won't be possible given the current restrictions and social distancing situation. Hopefully we will return in May but of course things keep evolving so no guarantees. The Spring Open has therefore been concluded and rated. Details of that, plus prizes for the Winter Open, are available on the website. www.arcadiachessclub.com

Important notice regarding COVID-19: Out of an abundance of caution, the county have closed the building until the end of the month. As of now, round 3 of the Spring Open will take place on April 6. We will update everyone if that date changes. The Spring Open finishing later will of course affect tournaments later in the year but a decision about those will be taken after the current situation has subsided.

Updated pairings and standings for Section 2 of the Spring Open are up on the website. Also, many thanks to the several people who sent in scoresheets and photos of the results for the Winter Open, which has now been rated. Congratulations to Marius Lucan and Russell Balcom who won the Open and U1800 sections respectively, each with a score of 4.5/5. Thanks also to Randy Hough for piecing together the results and making it possible to rate the event.

The Spring Open tournament starts tonight at Arcadia Chess Club. 6 rounds, 2 sections (Open/U1800). Please be there as early as possible to register, by 6:30pm at the latest please.

As many of you now know, our Tournament Director David King sadly passed away mid-February. Details of David's memorial will be made available when we have them as I am sure many would like to pay their respects. Randy Hough is the new Chief Tournament Director at Arcadia Chess Club. Randy has played at the club for 25 years and has also been a National Tournament Director for 35 years. Gary Schenk and Matt Hayes will assist. We ask that everyone at the club give Randy their full support as we move forward after what has been a difficult time. A new six round tournament, the Spring Open, starts Monday, March 2. We'll be at the chess club tonight to discuss a couple of options moving forward for the club. We will also have rated games (no fee) as I believe David would want us to play. Usual time: 6:30pm but if anyone is able to get there earlier, it would be appreciated.

We sadly lost our Tournament Director, David King, yesterday who passed away after complications from surgery. David was a wonderful man who will be missed by all. His tireless efforts for Arcadia Chess Club will not be forgotten and I am sure he want us to find a way for the club to continue. The club will meet on Monday as usual, however we will have a quick or blitz tournament. The current tournament will be considered completed (meaning it was a 5 round tournament instead... of 6) and I will try to get it rated, however this may take some time as David had all of the tournament data on his laptop. In the meantime, we will be in need of at least two volunteers to help keep the club running. Unfortunately, my circumstances mean I cannot be at the club every tournament so we will need a couple of others - at least one of whom should be a TD - to help run the club. This is something that can be discussed in more detail on Monday. Please keep David and his family in your thoughts at this difficult time. Thank you, Matt Hayes
