Episode 6: Pacific Rock Fish is now LIVE! Beyond the Pier is a new podcast series by Aquarium of the Bay where we explore the fascinating world of fish/wildlife and their habitats around the Bay Area. This episode will take us beyond the pier to see what lies beneath: a colorful, rocky world with a huge array of fish species.... Today, you'll hear about rock fish populations along the Pacific coast, from California to Alaska and the history of how they have been impacted by fisheries! Special thanks to intern Emily and Biologist Andrew for making this episode possible! Here are 5 toad-ally awesome Western Toad facts, just in case you frogot! DYK the California toad is a subspecies of the western toad, and we have a California Toad exhibit on the 3rd floor of our Aquarium, right as you enter the Bay Lab! Adult Western Toads can grow to 2-5 inches and have dry, warty skin. Don't worry, these amphibians will NOT give you warts if you touch them-unlike what's often shown in the movies.... Males are generally smaller than females-they have dark pads on their thumbs that help them cling to females during mating. They usually reach sexual maturity in two-three years and may live for 10 or more! Their diets consist of invertebrates like flying insects, ants beetles, slugs, and earthworms-most of which is located by vision and caught with a large, sticky tongue! Visit the California Toads on your next Aquarium visit with a timed ticket, available for purchase at aquariumofthebay.org/tickets Weekdays Only: use code TAHOE on our website for $5/$3 off adult/child tickets! Make an advanced reservation at the PIER 39 parking garage for only $10/day weekday and $15/day weekend rates!
