There are more than 63 Superfund Mining and Mineral Processing Sites west of the Mississippi River, including nine in Colorado. In Colorado alone, there are roughly 23,000 abandoned mines. EPA recently announced that it is creating a new office that will focus on cleaning up abandoned hardrock mining sites. It is important to note that an innovation in arsenic removal, like the AMS SafeGuard H2O, has drastically reduced the cost of treatment, achieving impressively safer levels, well below 5 ppb. Yet, nearly 20 years later, the standard for arsenic set by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency back in 2001 remains at 10 ppb.
