BIG NEWS: our new Orange Blossom Honey Lemonade is now available at @erewhon! We’ve been blown away by the positive reception our lemonade has received since its debut this summer, and are thrilled that so many more of you will be able to enjoy it as it becomes more readily available across Los Angeles and beyond. Our Orange Blossom Honey Lemonade has a unique and complex flavor while being made simply from just three ingredients: the juice of our own certified Biodyna...mic & Regenerative Organic (ROC) Lisbon lemons, water, and raw, local orange blossom honey from our friends @honeypacifica. Together, they make a tart, floral, and refreshing lemonade that will transport you right to the citrus orchards of Apricot Lane Farms. The lemonade is hitting shelves at Erewhon locations this week! Additionally, it’s available at our On-Farm Farmstand (every Saturday 10a-2p until 10/23-- only 2 Saturdays left!) and at the following locations: #CalabasasFarmersMarket (Saturdays) @marvistafarmersmarket (Sundays) @vintagegrocers @farmshopca @eatalyla @ladyandlarder @followyourheart Try it and let us know what you think! And if you spot it at any of these retailers, tag us in Stories and we will repost. See more

Thanks NPR KCLU Radio for telling the story of our On-Farm Farmstand! We're open every Saturday from 10 AM - 2 PM until October 23. "Prior to the pandemic we were selling all our produce at markets that were not anywhere near the farm. But when you're a farm like this, you're trying to grow food to feed your community. So it really gave us the opportunity to connect with the community in Moorpark and Ventura County area." Our flock just moved into our best lemon orchard and they’re relishing in the tastiest of feasts! Their affinity for grazing (and tree-skirting) in the citrus orchards, specifically is what keeps both them and our trees so healthy. It starts with our cover crop, which contains over 40 different forbes, grasses, and legumes, including some plants farmers would often view as weeds. This vast diversity of their diet equips the sheep with the nutrients needed to help war...d off diseases. And their bites of the cover crop cause the roots to slough off, which provides invaluable organic matter to the soil of the lemon trees and catalyzes growth of new, lush grasses. In addition to cover crop, the sheep love to nibble on the lemon trees, which is beneficial to both the animals and the plants (and the farmers!). The lemon leaves support the health of the sheep by acting as a natural dewormer (no chemical deworming needed here). Meanwhile, the lemon trees reap the benefits of the sheep eating their lower leaves, as it helps prevent the snails and other pests from making the leap from cover crop to tree. And they do the job of skirting for us, so we of course appreciate any assistance in keeping the orchard healthy! See more

Merry Fall! Just kidding, but it sure is looking festive in the orchard these days with all of our olive trees dusted in clay. We spray kaolin clay on our Mission, Manzanillo, Arbequina, and Lucca olive trees to protect them from our #1 olive pest: olive fruit fly. In years past, we’ve lost an entire season’s crop to this pest issue. The solution we’ve learned to be most successful is spraying the trees with clay as a physical protectant from the fly, in addition to usin...g yeast traps. We spray the clay the moment the trees set fruit, and then typically another round a month or two later. As a result, the olives are able to mature on the tree until they’re plump and juicy, and eventually get pressed into our Certified Organic, Biodynamic, 100% Pure Extra Virgin Olive Oil! The olives are hand-picked, hand-sorted, cold-pressed AND bottled right here on the farm. Fingers crossed, this year’s pressing should be ready this winter stay tuned! See more

Fall means figs Black Mission, White Genoa, Violette de Bordeaux, and Flanders Figs, specifically! Our orchard and fertility teams worked meticulously all year to fortify our trees’ soil and protect them from pests, and now we all finally get to enjoy the (literal) fruits of their labor. We’ll have figs for a little bit longer get them while you can at our On-Farm Farmstand (Saturday 10 AM - 2 PM) or Farmers Markets this weekend (schedule saved in highlights). One... of our favorite, simple ways to enjoy figs is Molly’s Fancy Figs - get the recipe below. And let us know your go-to ways to eat figs in the comments! INGREDIENTS 1 cup Mascarpone cheese 4 soft Medjool dates, pitted and coarsely chopped 2 dashes cinnamon 1 dash nutmeg Pinch lemon zest 10 figs, cut in half (stem to bottom) Raw honey, to drizzle INSTRUCTIONS 1. To a small bowl, add Mascarpone cheese. Using a hand mixer, beat until the cheese looks like thick whipped cream, approximately 20-30 seconds. 2. Add dates, cinnamon, nutmeg and lemon zest. Mix on medium to combine. 3. Scoop approximately 1 tablespoon onto the center of each fig. 4. Place figs on a serving platter and drizzle with raw honey. See more

Happy Fall Equinox! We’re celebrating with this hyper-seasonal bouquet of California Buckwheat, Goldenrod, and California Fuchsia. These three late-blooming native plants are critical to our ecosystem as they provide sustenance for our pollinators during the dearth we experience at the end of summer in Southern California, when the temperatures are high and pollinators’ food sources are low. California Fuchsia attracts Hummingbirds, Goldenrod is loved by Honeybees, and Buckwheat serves as a host to hundreds of beneficial insect species that are vital to the farm ecosystem. These plants won’t have to do all the heavy lifting as our pollinators’ sole food source for too long. Fall Equinox marks the start of planting season for our Habitat team, so there will be lots more plants for our pollinators to feast on very soon.

Want to know the secret to our eggs? If you’ve tasted them for yourself, you know that inside these pretty pastel shells are the most delicious eggs. For those who ask us HOW and WHY they're so drastically different from conventional eggs, here’s all you need to know: The secret is in the diet! The deep, mineral-rich flavor, plump orange yolks, firm whites and high nutrient density are thanks to our chickens’ diverse diet. Our hens roam freely on pastures wher...e they have access to a buffet of grasses, seeds, bugs (and the occasional mouse or lizard!). We supplement their foraged diet with free-choice organic, soy-free, GMO-free feed so they have access to all the vitamins and minerals they need. The result? Rich, plump-yolked eggs with high levels of vitamins A, E, K, Niacin, Thiamin & B12 that we all love so much. While often people think brown eggs = good/organic/healthy eggs, eggshell color actually has nothing to do with health of the chicken OR the egg, it’s simply based on the breed of the hen. At @apricotlanefarms, we raise 15 different breeds of chickens, including Easter Eggers, Rhode Island Reds, Leghorns, and Welsummers. This diversity of breeds lends itself to our beautifully colored egg boxes with hues of blues, greens, browns, whites, and even purple. You can try our eggs for yourself at our Saturday On-Farm Farmstand (Open every Saturday 10a-2p thru October 23!), or at our four weekly SoCal farmers markets. Check our Where To Buy highlight for our weekly schedule! What questions do you have about our chickens or eggs? Let us know in the comments! See more

The tail end of summer is bringing a bounty of gorgeous PURPLE produce! Beyond being beautiful to look at, purple pigments signify that a plant is loaded with a powerful healing antioxidant called #anthocyanin that gives fruit and vegetables their deep red, blue, and purple hues. These vibrant violet gems from our garden and orchards include Ping Tung Eggplant, Indigo Tomatoes, Burgundy Plums, Black Mission Figs, and Violette de Bordeaux Figs. See below for our ...full weekly farmers market & on-farm Farmstand schedule. And important to note: October 23 is our LAST Saturday Farmstand of the season, as we’ll be breaking for winter and will resume in spring 2022. So come out soon, stock up on produce, and take some time to stroll around our market garden! Every year as summer transitions into fall, the Goldenrods bloom, beautifying the pond with their vibrant yellow flowers. Their primary role on our farm is to provide sustenance for our pollinators at this particular time, as nectar-producing flowers aren’t as abundant. But pollinators aren’t the only ones who can benefit from Goldenrods for centuries, the plants have been used by people in America and Europe for medicinal properties. The healing properties of the plan...t inspired the scientific name Solidago, which means to make whole. These are some of its most common medicinal uses: Heals sores, infections, toothaches, burns, and wounds when applied topically Nourishes and restores balance to the kidneys, and is used to treat kidney stones Supports the cardiovascular system with its high levels of the antioxidant compound rutin Helps dry up congestion in the nose and lungs caused by colds, flu, allergies and sinus problems Used as a mouth rinse to treat inflammation of the throat because of its antiseptic and antimicrobial properties If you have access to Goldenrod, here’s how you can make a simple tea from its fresh flowers: Harvest plants with healthy leaves when they’re just beginning to bloom (being sure to leave half the stems in tact for the pollinators and plants’ photosynthesis) Remove the flower heads from the plant Measure 2 tablespoons of fresh flowers Bring 8 oz of water to boil Steep for 15 to 20 minutes Strain the tea Enjoy plain or sweetened with honey! What are your experiences with Goldenrod? Share with us below! See more

Nothing says spring is here like the first week of lambing season! In the last 7 days, our livestock team and mama ewes have had their hands (and hooves!) full. Starting with our first set of twins (pic 3), we now have 17 lambs and counting! We’re happy to report moms and babies are healthy and doing well, munching on the lush spring cover crop in our lemon orchard. ... The key to keeping our ewes healthy, especially during lambing season, lies in the diversity of our cover cropcontaining more than 40 different types of forbes, grasses, and legumes. This vast diversity of their diet, and lots of it, equips our moms with the nutrients needed for the extra demands of nursing. Go mamas go!

(John here) To the eco-land stewards: Are you looking to be inspired? I encourage you to get this book. Agro ecologist @nicolemasters goes just as deep on science as she does on getting to the heart of why we all love Agro-ecology, regenerative agriculture, biodynamics or whatever the heck you wanna call it. She is a master of systems thinking, and she has weaved it together with real life examples from her years of working with farmers from around the world. Her perspectives... and science may challenge the beginner, but even if you are one...you won’t be after reading it. Let us know what you think & and what other books have inspired you recently?! To support Nicole directly we suggest purchasing directly from her website (linked in bio). While it says you can only purchase in Australasia they do now ship to the U.S. for a small flat rate shipping fee. https://www.integritysoils.co.nz/prod/for-the-love-of-soil/

Our ducks are best known for keeping our snail populations in check, but even our mighty ducks can’t get every snail enter the Roadrunner. We’ve spotted Roadrunners across the farm, usually darting from shrub to shrub in our habitat restoration areas. But recently we’ve noticed they’ve taken on the task of maintaining balance in the orchards by hunting one of our most problematic pests, snails. (swipe to see!) Running up to 15 miles per hour, Roadrunners skillful...ly hunt snails hiding in the cover crop. From the smallest microbe to the magnificently fluffy-headed Black Crested Polish hen, everything on our farm serves a purpose. And while the Show Girls who occupy our garden coop are always ready to jump in and mitigate pests in-between bed turns, they play another important role on the farm making us smile. We’ll admit a few of these breeds aren’t the most practical (as pictured: Black Crested Polish, Buff Crested Polish, Turken, Columbian Wyandotte, & Egyptian Fayo...umi) but the comedic relief they provide more than makes up for their occasionally impaired vision. #showchickens #chickens #chickensofinstagram #regenerativefarming #regenerativeagriculture #regenerative #farm #farming #farmer #agriculture #la #farmlife #zen #thegoodlife #peace #peaceful #love #farmliving #farmlifebestlife #farmanimals #farmfamily #familyfarm #familyfarming #onthefarm #farmstagram See more

Growing over 150 varieties of fruit in our orchards, it’s hard to pick a favorite. But if we had to our favorite would be cover crop. While it’s not a crop we can sell at the market, you can taste the soil-building benefits in everything we produce. Conventional notion says these edible grasses, clovers, and even plants some would consider weeds planted between orchard rows will compete with trees for resources. But cover crop adds biodiversity and organic matter to the... soil fueling our soil ecosystem prevents erosion, suppresses invasive weeds, and sequesters water and atmospheric carbon. Which is why when anyone growing food asks, how can I make my garden/ farm/ homestead more regenerative? our first answer is always a resounding cover crop! #covercrop #agriculture #regenerativefarming #regenerativeagriculture #regenerative #farm #farming #farmer #agriculture #la #farmlife #zen #thegoodlife #peace #peaceful #love #farmliving #farmlifebestlife #farmanimals #farmfamily #familyfarm #familyfarming #onthefarm #farmstagram #lifeonafarm #farmsofinstagram #simpleliving #simplejoys #thehappynow See more

Who needs front teeth? Not Firefly! Cows actually don’t have top front teeth, so instead of taking bites, their super-powerful tongues wrap around and pull the grass into their mouths. This motion enables cows to do less damage to grass than other grazing animals as they don’t eat the plant all the way down to the root. Instead, their tongues rip off the top portion of the blades, causing the equivalent amount of the plant’s roots to slough off into the soil, bu...ilding soil organic matter. Farming is a lot of trial and error. And after a few seasons of losing apples to Santa Ana winds we decided to stick to what works early fruiting Gordon apples and let go of what doesn’t later fruiting Granny Smiths. And fortunately through the artful science of tree grafting, we’re able to utilize the already established trees and transform the 88 Granny Smith trees to Gordons. Back in February our team learned how to graft from a master grafter, and now 8 months l...ater with the grafts successfully taken we’re proud to say they NAILED it (Swipe to see the transformation). In the simplest of terms, the process involves cutting most of the tree’s branches to stumps, except one which acts as a nurse branch keeping the plant alive as the grafts establish. The new varietal’s branches are then attached to the existing tree using scion wood. Sealed with wax, grafting tape, and protected from the elements with a paper bag, the two varietals cambium layers (the tree trunks growth layer) grow together into a new tree. With our nurse branches now removed, the trees flush with leaves, and even a few bloom sightings the trees are officially successfully grafted & we’re hopeful for a first fruit next season. #regenerativefarming #regenerativeagriculture #regenerative #farm #farming #farmer #agriculture #la #farmlife #zen #thegoodlife #peace #peaceful #love #farmliving #farmlifebestlife #farmanimals #farmfamily #familyfarm #familyfarming #onthefarm #farmstagram #lifeonafarm #farmsofinstagram #simpleliving #simplejoys #thehappynow #livethelittlethings #purejoy See more
