Congratulations to Applied EarthWorks' Cross-Trained Field Technician/Administrative Assistant, Aimee Montenegro, for her recent collaborative virtual presentation to the Pacific Coast Archaeological Society (PCAS). We are proud of the research and salvage excavation she completed with others, under the direction of her former professor, Paul Langenwalter, which resulted in their presentation entitled, "Relocating Ancestor's Grave from the Village of Cahuenga."

An urban legend connects the now-extinct genus of megafaunal ground sloth (Lestodon) and avocados. This legend attributes the evolution and dispersal of avocados to the giant ground sloths’ ingesting the fruit and defecating the seeds. This story tends to make the rounds every year in social media and Sci Comm blogs, usually around National Guacamole Day. Æ Senior Paleontologist, Melissa Macias, and her co-author, Dr. Robert K. McAfee, are presenting their research on this to...pic with a poster at the 80th Annual Meeting of the Society of Vertebrate Paleontology, which is being held this week (October 12th -16th) online for the first time. Their research used paleobiogeographical data and previously analyzed coprolite contents from North and South America to determine the plausibility of this myth. The results of their study show no firm evidence linking Lestodon, or any other giant ground sloth taxa, to the evolution and dispersal of avocados. See more

Dr. Amy Ollendorf, Æ Managing Principal/Paleontology Program Manager, has been providing natural and cultural resource management consulting services on a voluntary, pro bono basis as part of an effort to secure funding for an important ecological restoration project. Applied Earthworks Inc is proud of Dr. Ollendorf's generosity! The Cherry Hill Barrens is one of only four known, remaining, now-isolated serpentine barrens in the State of Maryland. Formerly extensive throughou...t the East Coast, serpentine barrens and their open grassland/oak savannah ecosystems are now endangered as a result of intensified land use through the Historic Period to the present and concomitant fire suppression. Dr. Ollendorf has been providing technical input on geological history as well as prehistory and human ecology in addition to funding strategies and proposal advice. Thank you, Amy!

California Climate Action Day is today, September 24, 2020. For those of us in California, this day comes at a time when climate change is impossible to ignore. Unprecedented wildfires are sweeping the state, interrupting millions of lives with destruction, electrical blackouts, and smoke-filled air. As these disasters impact the landscapes near my home, I'm reminded that climate change affects everyone, every day, and we have a responsibility to take action. Please participate in this Climate Action Day. California governor Gavin Newsom will be hosting the free virtual event on YouTube from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. (PDT) with a variety of speakers and panelists. Tune in at any time. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NEZ1AUjQfos&feature=youtu.be
