A few years ago I was living in a 400 square foot apartment, completely dependent on foodstamps, public assistance and drugs. Every single day I woke up with th...e same thoughts, the same restricted, bleak future and a very hopeless, heavy heart. I thought I was destined for failure and death. I had no dreams. I had no inspiration. I had no plans for the future. I had nothing except for a desperate desire to get high. But the incredibly ironic truth was that I still kept hearing this very still, small voice inside of me that kept telling me that I was destined for something great. I rarely heard that voice, but when I did I felt this desperate desire to change. I would tell myself that I was going to change... someday. The funny thing about life is that it doesn't matter how much we want to change- our want doesn't get us where we need to go. It is our radical choices and huge beliefs that truly change us. It's listening to that voice and acting on it. When I got clean at the end of 2014, I started hearing that small voice more. By 2015, the voice became louder after a miraculous experience with God. I knew that God gave me something special to give to the world. For the last few days, I've been working with this grammy-winning engineer and producer. He's produced Drake, Adele, Ed Sheeran and many others. The song we made, along with my producer Brennan, will impact many lives. We will make more songs that will, too. For the last almost 2 years I have made choices to pursue my calling, with the radical belief that my music will transcend the darkness in this world and it will inspire people to change. If you hear that same voice inside of you calling you to be something more- LISTEN to it. So many people have tried to tell me that I should be doing something else, years ago I was told I'd only ever be a drug addict.. but the point is that only YOU can hear that still small voice and only you know your calling. It may seem crazy to everyone else, but it doesn't matter what they think you should be. Keep believing. Keep making choices that align with your calling. Keep hoping for more. People who listen to that still small voice move mountains. Anything is possible.

Our 7 year anniversary is coming up and I want to share 7 things I’ve learned about blending a family. 1. Putting your marriage first is not a betrayal to the ...children you bring into the marriage. Yikes! That felt awkward to even write, but when you choose a partner you’re choosing who you want to build with for the rest of your life. Your marriage is the environment your children will be raised in. Your marriage should lead not be an afterthought. 2. It’s okay for your partner to parent their children. When you first get married you can’t force the whole family thing. At the end of the day you’re a bunch of strangers living together. Your partner knows their child better than you. If you have a perspective take it to their parent until you’ve built enough rapport and trust to go the child directly. BONUS: If your partner wasn’t active in their children’s life before you they won’t be active because of you. Ain’t nobody got time to raise children and a partner. Highly suggest marrying someone who shares the same values concerning parenting (sacrifice, discipline, communication, and fun). 3. Just because you identify an issue doesn’t mean you need to address it immediately. You need to pray before offering a perspective that could be received as criticism. The Holy Spirit will give you wisdom on what to do with what you see. 4. You don’t have to figure out where you fit. My bonus children have a mother and a father. I felt like my husband organically fit in my children’s lives because of the vacancy. Whereas I was just floating with no clear role. Turns out that floating is my jam. I get to be friend, Madre, teacher, stylist, chef, therapist, workout buddy, side eye partner, and so many other things! 5. Your partner does NOT replace your kid’s absentee parent. Sorry to break it to you but that void WILL still be there. Only God, time, and therapy can fix that. You didn’t fix their broken heart by offering them a new toy. Don’t put that pressure on your partner or your child. Honor the void, but also help them to see the many ways God still provides even if it’s not from our desired source. (Continued in comments)
