Marissa is a key member of our front-line team managing all incoming communications and other special projects, including document tracking and coordination. Prior to ANX, she served as a clinical assistant in a medical office and continues to grow her knowledge in the healthcare field. #2020 was tough... and weird. But we took it in stride and still managed to have a lot of fun. We refocused on finding ways to help the community, like collecting donations of PPE and redistributing it to those who needed it most. We also hosted a few virtual events, and an in-person socially-distant drive-in movie night. Thank you for an amazing year. And cheers to #2021!

In addition to working full time, she is also in ...school majoring in Business Management specializing in Human Resources. In observance of National Hospice Month, we are proud to feature another rockstar member of our hospice team for #TeamMemberTuesday! Meet Justin Kumar, MSW. As a Hospice Medical Social Worker, Justin is responsible for assisting patients and their families with counseling, hospice education, resource linkage and therapeutic interventions as they progress through various end-of-life stages. Justin received his Bachelor’s Degree in Communication and Sociology with minors in Pol...itical Science and Psychology from UC Davis. He went on to receive his Master’s in Public Health (MPH) from UCLA Fielding School of Public Health, and his Master’s in Social Welfare (MSW) from UCLA Luskin School of Public Affairs. During his time at UCLA, Justin worked as a teaching assistant in UCLA’s Department of Sociology, served as the Vice Chairman and Chairman of UCLA’s Communications Board, and was a founding member of UCLA’s chapter of Phi Alpha, the national social work honor society. During his MPH program, he received a fellowship grant for an internship in geriatric medicine, which he completed at the West Los Angeles VA Medical Center. His work in geriatric care motivated him to pursue a career in hospice, which eventually led him to his new ANX family. Justin is inspired by ANX’s core value of Do what’s right, otherwise be kind and treat everyone like family. In living this philosophy, he leads a weekly support group to help ANX staff manage the daily stresses of work and home life due to the COVID pandemic. He advices, "Find something that inspires you. Even in the midst of this pandemic, find ways to turn a negative into positive. Always be grateful because you never know what you're going to have and what you're going to lose minute by minute."

In observance of National Hospice Month, we are delighted to feature one of our awesome LVNs at ANX Hospice Care, Valarie Bono. Valarie went into healthcare because she is passionate about helping others. She says, "Let’s face it, not everyone is cut out to be a nurse. In the midst of it all, a nurse is one who opens the eyes of a newborn and gently closes the eyes of the dying. It is indeed a high blessing to be first and last to witness the beginning and end of life. To fee...l loved at the end of life, its the most important gift we can give anyone." She adds, "ANX is family. It is not just a company. I have finally found a company with the same integrity, compassion and understanding as I do." Nova is our Associate Director of Hospice Care responsible for spearheading the expansion of our San Jose Hospice Care team. Besides leading the hospice team, Nova also manages several initiatives within ANX including the N95 Fit Test Program and our Flu Vaccine campaign. She also makes the rounds in the community as a clinical educator and trainer for ANX. Nova is a Certified Hospice and... Palliative Nurse with more than 20 years of experience in the healthcare industry, ranging from senior living facilities, home-health, and hospice care. She became a nurse because she believes in caring with compassion one patient at a time. She was drawn to ANX because of the family-oriented culture, the humility of people and their belief in simple acts of kindness. Outside of work, she enjoys crafts, photography, and traveling. In closing out National Rehab Month, we are delighted to share the tribute posted by our Director of Rehab, Karen Yong: "There are 2 people I want to dedicate my tribute to & am grateful for in helping me appreciate our ANX rehab team and shaped who we are and can be. Firstly in honor of Ann Hallum, my PT professor 38 years ago, who passed away from cancer several weeks ago. Ann Hallum was a lifelong PT educator who taught me to think for myself and to UNDERSTAND the WHY o...f things...in order for me to create better & more effective treatments for my patients. That has been one of my guiding principles throughout my PT career. I hope that I have instilled the same in those whom I have trained, led and wish to inspire. Secondly in admiration & remembrance of Ruth Bader Ginsburg, Supreme Court Associate Justice, who also passed away from her fight with cancer at 87 on Friday September 18th while still serving our nation. Ruth Ginsburg was a leader who was a dreamer and a doer. She changed the law and was a champion on how we viewed equal rights for all. I quote from her: No door should be closed to people willing to spend the hours of effort needed to make dreams come true. Rehab Team: your passionate care spent with your patients and then afterwards to FINISH the work with thoughtful communication and effective documentation has not gone unnoticed. Our DREAM for a better tomorrow in home healthcare & for continued stability within ANX stemming from all your effort and hard work will be realized. It takes a village for the DREAM to happen and it begins with each of us. Thanks for being part of my VILLAGE and the ANX DREAM TEAM."
