*Double-Shooting Press Release* On 3/9/2021, at approximately 11:14 AM, Antioch police officers were called to the 2100 block of Aspen Way on the report of a subject that was shot in the street. Numerous officers responded to the scene and located a sedan stopped in the street with several bullet holes in it. The vehicle was unoccupied. Officers quickly learned that the vehicle was occupied by two male victims who were wounded and fled to a nearby residence. The suspect(s) ...responsible for the shooting fled the scene in a vehicle and were not located. The victims, 21 and 22 years-old, were found to have both been shot. Officers immediately began providing first-aid and called for emergency paramedics. Ultimately, both victims were transported to local area hospitals. One was transported by ambulance, and the other was transported by helicopter. The victims in this case appear to have been targeted by the suspect(s). Currently, the 21 year-old victim is listed in critical but stable condition, and the 22 year-old victim is listed in critical condition. Antioch Police Department’s Crime Scene Investigators and Detectives with the Violent Crimes and Special Operations Units responded to the scene and took over the investigation. Currently, detectives are working to identify any suspects or persons-of-interest. The investigation is still active, and evidence is being collected and evaluated. Anyone with information is asked to call the Antioch Police Department non-emergency line at (925)778-2441. You may also send an anonymous text tip to 274637 (CRIMES) using the keyword ANTIOCH.

We love receiving messages like this: Hi, APD. I have 3 kids. 2 of them decided to participate in your Pen Pal Program. Ian is 7 (and now missing his 2 front teeth as of today ... the tooth fairy is coming tonight). Ian's Pen Pal is Officer Whitaker. Ian was thrilled to receive an old patch from his old actual uniform AND a handmade card from his daughter. She even made his badge. Officer Whitaker has turned the Pen Pal program into a family affair for his family (and ...ours as well). One of our sons had a letter drop off by one of the officers on patrol in his SUV. It was a BIG deal for our son. He was so excited. Corporal Colley went above and beyond to make sure our 10 yr old son, Mason, felt special. Thank you for being a part of our Pen Pal Program! Our officers are waiting so send your letter today: 300 L Street, Antioch, Ca 94509 Attn: Pen Pal Program

The Antioch Police Department is following up on reports of a suspicious circumstance that took place on 1/4/2021 shortly after 4:00 pm. Residents in the area of Willow Avenue in Antioch called 9-1-1 to report a possible fight that resulted in a subject being forced into a car. Through further investigation, officers obtained surveillance footage that depicted what looks more like a family dispute involving a defiant male juvenile. An extensive search for the involved parties was conducted which met with negative results. Based on the footage, the involved vehicles appear to be a 2019/2020 Toyota Rav4 and a 2019/2020 Chevy Equinox. Anyone with information is asked to contact the APD Investigations Bureau at (925) 779-6884.

Please join us in recognizing Officer Eric Johnsen’s dedication and service to the Antioch Police Department Traffic Unit! Eric has been a Police Officer for 21 years. He worked for the Oakland Police Department for seven years before transferring to the Antioch Police Department in 2006. Eric served in the Traffic Unit from 2008-2009, when, due to staffing issues, he went back to Patrol. In 2016, as staffing improved, he returned to the Unit. Eric is also a Driving, Radar ...and Lidar Instructor and an active member of our Recruiting Team. In his free time, Eric enjoys spending time with his family and riding his Harley Davidson motorcycle. Fun fact: Eric is a die hard 49er fan and his favorite player of all time is Steve Young. Eric met his idol and had his jersey signed after his wife, Sonia, told the iconic football player that it was their anniversary. Next month Officer Johnsen rotates back to patrol after 5 years of service as a APD Motor Officer. When asked what he will miss most about being a Motor Officer, Eric responded he will miss doing a job he loves while getting to ride a motorcycle. Thank you Officer Johnsen for your dedication and service to the Antioch Police Department Traffic Unit!

Here’s a flashback Friday post for the ages! Back in 1995, Chief Tammany Brooks and Corporal Steve McElroy were classmates in the 128th Police Academy at Los Medanos College . In the top photo, a memory of 25 years ago as they were both sworn in as Antioch Police officers. In the bottom photo, 25 years later.........and maybe a little bit grayer, a re-enactment of that very moment in the same room! Both couldn’t be prouder to have spent their entire careers with the Antioch Police Department and both are prepared for the old jokes!

Yesterday morning, our APD Traffic Unit joined officers from the California Highway Patrol, along with the Brentwood, Oakley and Pittsburg Police Departments to conduct a joint traffic enforcement campaign in East County. Officers conducted enforcement at various locations in Pittsburg and Brentwood, including on Highway 4 (between Sand Creek and Camino Diablo), and the Marsh Creek/Vasco Road areas. In total, 135 citations were issued by the participating agencies. The goal ...of these operations is to slow speeds and address aggressive driving behaviors to prevent collisions. In 2017, there were 277,160 people injured and 3,904 fatalities on California roadways. High visibility enforcement is a major deterrent to the driving behaviors that lead to these tragedies. Look for more operations in the coming weeks to include roadways in our city. #antiochpdca #apdtrafficunit CHP Contra Costa City of Brentwood - Police Department Pittsburg Police Department, Pittsburg, CA

On Saturday, October 17, 2020, at about 1:00 am, Antioch Police patrol officers were notified of a brutal sexual assault that occurred in the Palms Parking Lot (near the Foot of G Street). Officers learned two victims were fishing at the San Joaquin River and returned to their vehicle at about 11:50 pm the previous evening. They were approached by two male suspects who were armed with handguns. The suspects robbed and pistol whipped both victims. After doing so, both suspects... forced the female victim to perform sexual acts on them. The suspects left the scene in a vehicle and minutes later attempted to use a credit card stolen in the incident at an ATM. Members of the Antioch Police Investigations Bureau took over the investigation and performed an extensive collection of video evidence. This included areas near the scene of the crime and the ATM that was used. From this video collection, investigators developed a suspect, 31-year-old KENRY LEE YOUNG of Antioch. A reference sample of his DNA was compared to forensic evidence from the scene of the crime, resulting in a positive match. On October 22, 2020, members of the Antioch Police Special Operations and Problem Oriented Policing Units arrested Kenry Lee Young at his residence, which was only a few blocks from the crime scene. Detectives conducted additional investigation and learned the second suspect was Kenry Young’s brother, 33-year-old LAMAR YOUNG of Stockton. On October 29, 2020, members of the Special Operations and Problem Oriented Policing Units placed Lamar Young under arrest in Stockton. On Monday, November 2, 2020, the Contra Costa County District Attorney's Office charged both Kenry and Lamar Young with multiple felonies, including oral copulation by force, sodomy by force, sexual penetration by force, aggravated assault with a firearm, and two counts of robbery. Both remain in-custody at the Martinez Detention Facility awaiting trial and their bail was set at $3,450,000. The Antioch Police Department would like to thank the members of the community who assisted us with this investigation, in addition to the Contra Costa Sheriff’s Office Crime Lab, Serological Research Institute, FBI Federal Bureau of Investigation, and Stockton Police Department. Additional inquiries or information can be directed to Antioch Police Detective Inabnett at (925) 779-6932 or by emailing [email protected]. Anonymous tips or information about this or any other incident can be sent via text to 274637 (CRIMES) with the keyword ANTIOCH. #antiochpdca

Folks, can you help us spread the word that APD doesn’t play? Today, at around 12:55 pm, an officer on patrol in the area of East 13th Street and August spotted a Honda taken in an armed carjacking from Oakland. A stop was attempted, but the driver led us on a pursuit which entered the freeway and exited at Hillcrest. When the driver tried to make a u-turn at Hillcrest and Wildflower, Officers Erickson, Padilla, Hamilton, and Smith, along with Sgt. Martin, fo...rcibly stopped the vehicle and ended the chase. No injuries, minor damage to the Honda, and the 13-year-old driver was turned over to the Oakland Police Department. You saw in our previous post what can happen when someone decides to flee from the law. Officers sometimes use intervention tactics to put a stop to this dangerous behavior and help keep Antioch safe. Can you help us get the word out that Antioch isn’t the place to run from the law? #antiochpdca

Stolen Truck Driver Flees to Taco Bell Arrested On 10/17, APD was notified of a stolen pickup truck entering our city that failed to stop for our friends at the Pittsburg Police Department, Pittsburg, CA. Said truck was being followed from the sky by the STARR3 helicopter from the CONTRA COSTA SHERIFF-OFFICIAL PAGE. Instead of engaging in a ground pursuit, we decided to let the helicopter follow the truck in the hopes it would park someplace. Instead of s...topping, the driver continued to drive erratically throughout our city until crashing into a vehicle at Lone Tree and Mokelumne. The driver fled into a shopping center, but thanks to the deputies aboard STARR3, along with Dispatcher Lacy Scott, Officer Dibble was able to find and arrest her before she slipped into a Taco Bell. The victim of the collision suffered minor injuries, but his vehicle was totaled. This case was presented to the Contra Costa County District Attorney’s Office, who charged the arrestee with multiple felonies, including hit-and-run causing injury, driving a vehicle without the owners consent, possession of a stolen vehicle, and enhancements for prior related convictions. Ironically, she had been released a few months ago on her own recognizance from another Antioch stolen vehicle arrest, which is still pending. Her bail from this latest arrest was set at $225,000 and she remains in-custody awaiting trial. We are grateful for the assistance we receive from the Contra Costa Sheriff’s Office with their Air Support Unit. This is how law enforcement works together to keep Antioch safe! Speaking of keeping things safe, did you know property crime in Antioch is down -32.8% since 2012 and auto theft specifically is down -44.3%. How ‘bout them numbers? #antiochpdca

Everyone is a Pedestrian: October is National Pedestrian Safety Month October is National Pedestrian Safety Month and the Antioch Police Department encourages the public to remember that everyone is a pedestrian. Whether in a parking lot, crosswalk, or intersection, we are all pedestrians.... Always be aware and look for pedestrians. We want those who are out walking to be safe and feel safe when in our neighborhoods, especially during the holiday season. In an effort to promote a safe walking environment in our community, the Antioch Police Department will focus on locations with a higher number of incidents of vehicle crashes involving pedestrians. Keep your eye out, in the near future Antioch police officers will monitor crosswalks for drivers and pedestrians who fail to yield the right-of-way or other violations that put pedestrians at risk. The number of pedestrians killed has grown by about 50% over the past decade, with 6,283 pedestrians killed in traffic crashes nationwide in 2018, or one traffic-related pedestrian death every 84 minutes. Excess speed, poor lighting, crossing outside crosswalks and impairment are the main factors that lead to a pedestrian being struck by a vehicle. The Antioch Police Department offers the following tips for drivers and pedestrians: Drivers Slow down on busy streets and intersections. Always look for pedestrians in intersections. Stop and allow pedestrians to cross. Pedestrians have the right-of-way at all marked or unmarked crosswalks. Stay off the phone and avoid other distracting behaviors such as eating, grooming, or using in-dash touch screens. Do your best to not block crosswalks making a right-hand turn. Keep headlights on at night and be extra careful when pedestrians are harder to see. Pedestrians Obey signs and signals. Try to cross at marked crosswalks, preferably at stop signs or signals where cars expect to see pedestrians. Make eye contact and nod or wave at drivers. A quick nod or wave is an easy way to let a driver know you see them, and they see you. Get in the habit of walking with a flashlight or wearing a reflective vest at night so it is easier for drivers to spot you. If you need to briefly walk into the street to maintain social distancing on sidewalks, look both ways for passing cars. Funding for this program is provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

As the day was coming to a close, those of us who work AT the Police Department heard a huge commotion of honking horns out front. We all ran to the front to see if someone may be in need of our help! Thankfully, we were pleasantly surprised by a group of motorcycles and a van representing the "Riding for Christian Motorcyclists Association," who came by to wish us well on National First Responders Day . Such a fun surprise and luckily, they came just as we were about to have a shift change and were able to bring some officers out to accept their well wishes and take a big picture - masks on, of course .

Meet your Beat! Meet Officer Eric Rombough. He has been with Antioch PD since February of 2017. Before coming to Antioch, he began his career at Alameda County Sheriff’s Office where he worked corrections, gang classification and patrol. Eric played college soccer and also professionally in Bolivia prior to taking over his family’s construction company and did not start his law enforcement later in life at age 32. Officer Rombough is currently assigned to the Problem Or...iented Policing Team (POP Team) as well as the department’s SWAT team and Gang Unit. When not at work, Eric enjoys spending time with his family that includes his four dogs - two Great Danes, a Chiweenie and a Formosan Mountain Dog. He also enjoys wine tasting and cooking using his Traeger smoker. A funny fact about Eric is that our dispatchers tease him and use his mumbling on the radio to test new dispatchers. Now that he is on dayshift and, it is not quite as difficult a test as when he used to work graveyard shifts!

Since October 1st, your APD officers have recovered 33 illegally possessed firearms, the majority of which have been from convicted felons, or individuals already on parole or probation. Most of these seizures have occurred from traffic stops , where an individual in the vehicle was determined to be on parole or probation, or there was some other cause that allowed officers to search the vehicle. The rest of these seizures occurred during search warrant op...erations conducted by our Investigations Bureau, in conjunction with our Special Operations and Problem Oriented Policing (POP) Units. Our violent crime rate for 2020 is trending downward from previous years, -39% since 2012 and -10% since last year. We attribute this in large part to increased staffing (120 strong and growing!) With a bolstered police force, our officers have more time to conduct proactive enforcement contacts and ongoing investigations. Another HUGE factor on our side is the community we serve Antioch STANDS UP in the face of crime, and works with us to keep things safe. There are a number of ways you can help us protect our city: If you see something suspicious, you can call our Dispatch at (925) 778-2441 or 9-1-1 if you think it’s an emergency. You can also text 9-1-1 from a cellphone if you are unable to call. Some things you might be asked about include the location of occurrence, along with descriptions of persons, vehicles, and license plates. If you have a tip regarding drug dealing or an ongoing crime problem, you can contact our POP Team by emailing [email protected]. If you prefer to remain anonymous, you can text a tip to 274637 and include the keyword ANTIOCH in your text. All text tips are encrypted and cannot be traced to the sender, unless you choose to give us your contact information. If you would like to report a traffic problem in your neighborhood (including speeding vehicles, stop sign runners, etc.) click on this link www.antiochca.gov/police/traffic-unit and fill out the requested information. If you would like to report abandoned vehicles on your street, including those with expired registration or illegally parked, you can leave a message on our abandoned autos hotline (925) 779-6981, or send them an email at [email protected]. Working together , we can keep Antioch a safe place to live, work and play! #antiochcapolice #antiochstrong #apdpopteam #apdtrafficunit

Her older brother was a baseball catcher and both of her parents coached and even owned an indoor batting cage in Antioch when she was a teen (The Batting Shack). Ta...rra started out her career with the Antioch Police Department in 1993 as a Reserve Police Officer (volunteer). In 1995, she became a Community Services Officer (while still a reserve) and finally, in 1997, she was hired as a full- time officer. Tarra has worked virtually every assignment at the police department, but has prided herself on her work in Training, Backgrounds and Recruiting. This has been a part of her job duties in some way since 2002. Lt. Mendes is currently assigned to Administration as the Administrative Lieutenant and can always be found involved in the Police Department’s Holiday Events (which she truly is passionate about). Tarra is married to a retired police officer and has three kids A daughter, who is a Junior at UC Irvine, her middle son, who is a Freshman at Howard College in Texas, where he is playing baseball, and her youngest son who is a sophomore in High School. All three children have grown up playing softball and baseball, so, just as her parents did, she enjoys traveling around watching them play ball. Fun Fact When Tarra first started playing ball, Antioch did not have softball for girls, so she played baseball in Antioch Little League. She was tall for her age, so the boys on her team always called her The lady at 1st base.
