Anglim Gilbert Gallery 14.11.2020

Dear Friends, After almost 50 years of vital and momentous exhibitions, Anglim Gilbert Gallery, formerly Gallery Paule Anglim, will close on September 30th. The final exhibitionsCarlos Villa: Pagmamano and Katherine Sherwood: Brain Flowersclosed on August 29th. The gallery will be open by appointment through the remainder of September. In the late 1960s, Paule Anglim started Architecture Art Service, placing important large scale works in public and corporate spaces on the ...West Coast. Gallery Paule Anglim opened in 1972 in North Beach, and quickly built an impressive roster of artists and a dedicated audience. Ten years later, she moved the gallery downtown to 14 Geary Street. Ed Gilbert began working as gallery manager in 1988, and was soon director. In a 1996 interview in The San Francisco Chronicle, Paule attributed much of the success of the gallery to Ed, who was responsible for bringing in many of the new, younger artists. Following Paule’s death in 2015, Ed continued the legacy with Anglim Gilbert Gallery, and was among the first galleries at Minnesota Street Project. We are grateful to all of you artists, collectors, curators, writers, and friends who have been a part of the gallery, and particularly for the great love and consideration you have given in the last weeks of Ed’s life. Stay tuned for more announcements in the near future from Shannon Trimble, who has some exciting news to share. Thank you. Contact after September 30, 2020 [email protected]

Ed Gilbert, owner-director of Anglim Gilbert Gallery, March 10, 1953 - July 19, 2020. Ed was a great supporter and mentor to artists - far beyond those represented by the gallery - and a much beloved leader in the Bay Area art community. We miss him dearly.

Carter is the first artist within our collection that we would like to honor as this pandemic continues to shut galleries and cancel exhibitions. His solo show ...Didn’t We Almost Have It All at the Anglim Gilbert Gallery could not be a more accurate title in light of recent events, as the gallery announced on the 14th of March the temporary closure of the venue in order to protect the safety and health of many of their visitors, artists and staff. Carter last had an individual show in 2017 and now, 3 years later, he continues his explorations of identity, visibility and sexuality alongside the dynamic representations of the artist’s mixed media pieces. The Adrastus Collection reached out to Carter to discuss his latest exhibition and the progression of his work and practice, which he tells us, took him almost two years to complete. Carlos Villa: Pagmamano was set to open today if not for the ongoing quarantine, but here is a little sneak peak for what's to come! . Carlos Villa, a native San Franciscan, was an unparalleled contributor to the city’s artistic fabric. An original member of the Rat Bastard Protective Association, alongside Joan Brown, Manuel Neri, and Bruce Conner, Villa viewed tight-knit, creative circles as essential to his practice. His close involvement in the cohort of Beat-era artists ...presaged the community-based approach to artmaking that would come to define his later work. . #AnglimGilbertGalleryArtists #AnglimGilbert #CarlosVilla #Pagmamano #SFGallery #BayAreaArtist #RatBastardProtectiveAssociation #UpcomingExhibition #GalleryExhibition . "There’s no question that Lynn Hershman Leeson is a prescient artist and filmmaker. Prescience is even a theme in her work, one she grapples with as a double-edged sword. Impossible to measure except in retrospect, it is a lonely quality to have in the present." - Filmmaker Magazine . In light of public health concerns surrounding the Coronavirus (COVID-19), Anglim Gilbert Gallery will be temporarily closed to the public beginning tomorrow Saturday, March 14, 2020. We feel it is the correct action to protect the health and safety of our visitors, artists, staff and the greater community. This difficult decision came after careful consideration of the guidelines from the World Health Organization, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and aft...er consultation with our partners at the Minnesota Street Project. During this time, we hope you will follow the gallery’s news through our social media platforms. We and the Minnesota Street Project building will continue to monitor health guidelines and will inform you on any additional changes. For the next two weeks, the gallery will be open by appointment only. Gallery operations will continue remotely and we can be reached via email. Our current exhibition, Carter: Didn't We Almost Have It All, has been extended through Saturday, April 4th. Thank you, Anglim Gilbert Gallery
