Stress and pain: are they linked? Two of the most common complaints we treat at Calm San Diego are 1. Stress and 2. Pain. And as it turns out, they’re usually linked! ... So what’s the connection between stress and pain? When we’re stressed, the body reacts. Our hearts race, our muscles tense, our breathing shortens. We release cortisol in large amounts. As a result, we experience pain differently. Our chronically stressed and strained muscles become more tense and painful. Cortisol increases our sensitivity to pain. And lack of healthy blood flow and oxygenation slows down our healing processes. Our pain increases, and so does our stress. To stop the stress-pain cycle we need to address both stress and pain. Thankfully, acupuncture excels at both! Ready to put an end to the stress and pain that’s keeping you from loving your life? We’re here to lead the way. Send us a DM to learn how acupuncture could help you create a life you love. It’s time to stop sweeping your anxiety under the rug. Anxiety is an interesting thing If you suffer from anxiety, you know how much of an impact it has on your life. But, you are also a master at covering it up. You hide it, bury it, and put on a happy face so no one knows. ... This trick might work for a while, but it’s not sustainable and our anxiety often grows when left to fester in the dark. In Chinese medicine, suppressed emotions are illnesses waiting to happen. They become lodged in the body and resurface bigger and meaner than before. Sometimes they manifest as physical issues like pain, fibromyalgia, or infertility. To the point It’s time to stop sweeping your anxiety under the rug. Let’s clean it up for good, with the help of acupuncture and Chinese medicine! Should you worry about plastic toxins? We live a modern life, and part of that includes exposure to chemicals and toxins. Many of these toxins come from plastics through the products we use and the foods we eat. These toxins are often considered EDCs or endocrine-disrupting chemicals. What does that mean? They can have negative effects on our reproductive health and potentially impact pregnancy or our fertility (for men and women). ... So, what can you do? Avoid using conventional plastic food containers, water bottles, and even self-care product containers made with plastic. Opt for items packaged in glass or paper or other plastic-free, sustainable containers. Never microwave or heat plastic food containers. Place food into a glass or ceramic dish before heating. Avoid handling receipt paper that is often coated in BPA chemicals. Toxins are everywhere, but we can take measures to reduce the toxic load on our bodies with some simple planning. What’s your favorite plastic swap? Love, Angela

When it comes to fertility, a well-rounded approach is often the best approach! I want to share three amazing holistic therapies that work amazingly together to enhance fertility. 1 The first one is acupuncture, of course! Acupuncture is one of the most important natural therapies for anyone trying to conceive. Studies show that acupuncture can increase blood flow to the uterus for a healthier lining, balance our reproductive hormones, and relieve stress. 2 Number two......Herbal medicine! Chinese herbal medicine is a powerful way to boost fertility. Chinese herbs help to lay a fertile foundation and address the root causes of why pregnancy hasn’t been successful (yet!). The beauty of herbal medicine is that it is entirely customized to you and your body’s needs. 3 And finally, the last therapy in our fertility team is massage! You can seek out specialized fertility or abdominal massage to improve blood flow through the lower abdomen, or simply go for a traditional massage. Massage helps to release mental tension and stress, and improve the body’s overall wellbeing. There you have it! Three holistic therapies that work in perfect harmony to prepare your body for a healthy, happy pregnancy. If you have questions about any of these therapies or what approach might be best for you, reach out at angelayvonne.com and I’d be happy to help you find the right path for you!

Why even bother talking about hormone balance?? If you’re one of my patients or are following along with me, it’s likely you’ve heard me mention hormone imbalance as a major cause of health issues. It’s one of my favorite topics! Hormones may cause a slew of issues, but when we get it right, the outcome is amazing. But what does hormone balance really mean?... There are tons of hormones in the body (like the famous estrogen and testosterone, as well as others like thyroid hormones and insulin). Hormones act as messengers and can regulate all kinds of activity in the body...or not. When hormones get out of whack, they put a wrench in the whole system. But because they are so elusive, we often don’t know that the resulting issues are related to hormone imbalance. How does hormone imbalance affect us? Hormone imbalance can cause a range of issues, but these are some common symptoms people experience when their hormones are off: Menstrual issues or infertility Metabolism changes, weight gain Fatigue, insomnia, low motivation Skin changes, acne, rashes Irregular or changeable moods, depression, or anxiety What can we do about it? Just as there are many ways we can throw our hormones off balances (diet, medications, habits), there are just as many ways we can improve our hormone balance and start to feel better. One of the quickest, most effective ways to naturally regulate our hormones is with acupuncture. Acupuncture helps the body bring order to the systems and keep hormones in a happy balance. So - are you ready to finally embrace hormone balance and get back to feeling like your old self? Head to AngelaYvonne.com and schedule your acupuncture visit to get back on track today! XO, Angela

Is brain fog more common in women? Feeling forgetful? Having trouble concentrating? Feel like your head is in a cloud? You could be experiencing brain fog - and you wouldn’t be alone. Brain fog is incredibly common, affecting most of us anytime we lose sleep, are overly stressed, or are battling other health issues. ... None of us are immune to brain fog, but some of us do seem to be more susceptible. In my experience as a practitioner, women tend to report symptoms of brain fog regularly. So, why does brain fog seem to affect women more regularly? Well, there’s a few reasons: Women’s hormone fluctuations can lead to fatigue, brain fog, and trouble focusing (pregnancy/menopause brain, anyone?!) Women tend to have more trouble sleeping, and lack of sleep is a major cause of brain fog Women may be more likely to overcommit, which leads to stress-induced brain fog Thankfully, we can reverse and prevent brain fog with some smart strategies - like my Brain Reboot Program! What are the best meals to break the fast when intermittent fasting? Hey all! On Instagram I shared that I am diving into the world of fasting, especially intermittent fasting. I have been limiting my meals to 10am to 7pm, and am already feeling some of the benefits!... Many people try techniques like intermittent fasting because they want to improve their digestion and gain more energy. This had me thinking - how could I get even more out of my intermittent fasting routine by fueling up with the best first meal of the day? Here’s what I found: Make it colorful - a bright salad or fresh bowl of fruit is a great way to ease your body into the eating portion of the day. You’ll immediately get a boost from all the vitamins and nutrients, while also replenishing with water and fiber. Fuel with energy - a veggie-packed omelet, a filet of salmon, or a hearty bean bowl is the perfect way to get the energy you’ll need for the day. Nourish with healthy fats - since we won’t be snacking all day long, we need to ensure we get all the best nutrients right off the bat. This includes healthy fats like avocado, olive oil, nuts, or fatty fish. One last tip - when intermittent fasting, staying hydrated is key. Don’t forget to drink plenty of fresh water or herbal tea throughout the day. Enjoy! Angela
