Sharing a special post in honor of Jane Withers Birthday yesterday and the story of when Peter Mintun took her to meet Miss Jean. Jane Withers was an American actress, model, and singer. Read to the end to hear about her encounter with our beloved Miss Jean <3 April 12, 1926 is the birthday of Jane Withers! In the early 1980s Jane would visit me in San Francisco. One Saturday we played with my dogs (she adores dogs and taught me how to do a convincing bark), then looked th...rough her old sheet music with historian Bob Grimes. While walking to Eichelbaum’s for lunch, a gust of San Francisco wind came up, which prompted Jane to put her hand to her head and exclaim, Thank God for the woman whose hair I am wearing! Jane uses old fashioned southern expressions I have never heard, like Great Gussie! While seated at Eichelbaum’s, who should walk in alone but producer Steve Silver. I couldn’t wait to see his reaction to meeting the great movie star Jane Withers. It was the kind of thing Steve dreamt about. Once they started talking they were inseparable. He invited her to his show (Beach Blanket Babylon) that night. He said how much he wanted to create a special walk-on part for her, in her Josephine, The Lady Plumber costume. He arranged for special seats for her that night. After lunch we proceeded to the Doll Hospital in the Richmond district, where dance teacher Jean Anderson was waiting for us. A long-time collector of dolls (and Hollywood memorabilia), Jane and Jean shared stories about dolls and dancers and dancing dolls. They were like twins separated at birth. What a day! Story and photos courtesy of former Anderson School pianist Peter Mintun.
