By planting a diverse mix of trees and shrubs around the cacao crop, dynamic agroforestry mimics an abundant forest ecosystem, creating long-lasting benefits for the planet. #regenerativeagriculture
Which would you choose, a lush forest ecosystem or a farm that can support only one crop? For us, regenerative agriculture is a no brainer. That's why we started the Alter Eco Foundation to help transition cocoa farmers from monoculture to a model of regenerative agriculture called dynamic agroforestry. Monoculture (planting only one crop) is widely used in industrial agriculture. Because of these practices, 24% of global greenhouse gas emissions can be tied to agricultur...e and forestry. Monoculture depletes soil, destroys biodiversity, exacerbates climate change and leaves farmers dependent on a single volatile crop. If we don't change farming practices, within 60 years, healthy soil could disappear. If the entire global cocoa industry transitioned from monoculture to dynamic agroforestry, more than 2.5 gigatons of CO2 would be redirected from harming the atmosphere to regenerating the soil. We're just one small chocolate company. We hope that through our Foundation work we can inspire other companies in our industry and others to follow suit. #regenerativeagriculture #altereco #alterecofoundation See more
At Alter Eco, we believe in the power of regenerative agriculture. A way of farming that's not only resilient to climate change, but actually has the potential to reverse it. A way of farming that respects our incredibly valuable soil and respects the human beings who grow our food. A way of farming that's not new, but has been used for centuries by indigenous people living in harmony with nature. The Alter Eco Foundation will help transition cocoa farmers from monoculture to... a model of regenerative agriculture called dynamic agroforestry. Instead of rows of cocoa trees under the hot sun, picture fruit trees, beans and timber trees planted alongside cocoa in a naturally balanced system. A bit of good news to brighten up your Friday. We’re so excited to see our friends in Canada ban single-use plastics. If we ever want to see similar legislation in the US, we need to VOTE for our planet this November. #plasticfree #noplastics PC: @cnnclimate
Every facet of our business has completely changed due to coronavirus. For the executive team working remotely, the company offers virtual weekly yoga, team movies, daily contests, and frequent team huddles. Since Alter Eco has direct and long-standing relationships with its farmers, the company has worked to give funds to protect these people and their families, in addition to making donations to farmers in Ecuador, Peru and the Dominican Republic." -Mike Forbes, Alter Eco CEO Thanks Forbes for including us in better-for-you treats for maximum relaxation and stress relief during these difficult days!
It's #ClimateWeek, a perfect time to recognize the great brands doing their part to protect our planet! Alter Eco is proud to be one of the first @beclimateneutral certified brands, along with great companies like @numiorganictea, @peakdesign, @allbirds, @kleankanteen and @miir. Alter Eco achieves Climate Neutral status through reforestation and conservation projects with cocoa farming communities in Peru and Brazil. In partnership with @purprojet, we've offset our full company carbon emissions for the past decade, everything down to employee commutes. We are excited to see more companies make similar commitments to offset their carbon emissions and fervently hope that small brands like us can inspire larger companies to follow suit. If we can do it, so can they. The time for climate action is NOW!
