Happy Aloha Friday - Let’s unplug and PLAY . With social distancing (or more accurately, physical distancing) a new way of life during the COVID-19 pandemic, people of all ages are challenged to find different ways to connect socially. . Play is how children learn best. Play is even more important during the current COVID-19 crisis because play builds resilience, mitigates stress and anxiety, and strengthens family bonds and relationships.... Learning is social, occurring in the context of relationships and interactions. Learning is about much more than content and skills. The shift to remote learning calls for activities and interactions that supplement content, provide active skill development and spark social engagement with others. . Some research shows that screen time can lead to speech and language delays in children. But TV shows, movies, and social media can be viewed in a way that optimizes social interaction. When possible, use these technologies interactively: Watch shows/movies together, and discuss them (e.g., Who was your favorite character? What do you think will happen next? Why did the show end that way?). Ask kids to introduce you to their favorite video game or TikTok personality. . Although this is no doubt a difficult time for all, parents can help children with language disorders to keep a safe physical distance without losing social nearness that is so critical to their development. . Great visuals from @cariebertseminars and information from the American Academy of Pediatrics! . #alohaspeechanddevelopmentcenter #speechtherapy #speechlanguagepathologist #speechpathology #noappbetterthanyourlap See more

Happy First Day of Fall check out these simple fun Fall-themed sensory bins for toddlers, preschoolers, Kindergarteners, and older kids (by Fireflies & Mud Pies). It’s perfect for quiet play . According to Goodstart.org the BENEFITS OF SENSORY PLAY: 1. It helps to build nerve connections in the brain. 2. It encourages the development of motor skills.... 3. It supports language development (check out last slide for more language tips). 4. It encourages ‘scientific thinking’ and problem solving. . For example, a child may find it difficult to play with other children when there is too much going on in their environment with conflicting noises or sights. . Through sensory play, the child can learn to block out the noise which is not important and focus on the play which is occurring with their peer. . Another example is a child who is particularly fussy with eating foods with a wet texture such as spaghetti. . The use of sensory play can assist the child with touching, smelling and playing with the texture in an environment with little expectation. As the child develops trust and understanding of this texture it helps build positive pathways in the brain to say it is safe to engage with this food. . Sensory play should be encouraged and supported at home and in early learning environments! . #alohaspeechanddevelopmentcenter #speechtherapy #earlyintervention #speechlanguagepathologist #speechlanguagetherapy #sensoryplayideas #fall2020 See more

Tomorrow, September 19th, is Talk like a Pirate Day . Ahoy, Me Hearties....The holiday is created all in fun, but for Speech-Language Pathologists we have a hidden agenda for promoting the MOST DIFFICULT sounds to remediate. . Did you know that the R sound is one of the most commonly used sounds in English? ... . Does your child say WABBIT for RABBIT? or WAT-UH for WATER? The R sound is typically the last sound to develop, usually around 6 years old. If your child is not able to say a correct R sound by 6 years old, you should consult with a Speech-Language Pathologist. . Since the sound is later-developing, one of the common misconceptions is to do nothing: Oh, just wait. It will correct itself. In many cases it will correct but, in almost as many times, correction of the sound needs a little help!! . Not pronouncing correct R’s can have a ripple effect if not addressed in a timely manner. Children may become more self-conscious of their speech, spelling may be affected adversely, and they may be open to teasing, resulting in a withdrawal from participation in discussions and activities. . If you have any questions or concerns, we’d be happy to discuss. You can PM anytime. [email protected] 805-416-0494 . It's been an incredibly difficult week for many of us. And parents everywhere are feeling so many different things right now. Because we believe that it's up to us to raise a generation that celebrates and embraces differences. A generation without racism. A generation that will become the change. ... With videos like the one of George Floyd's death, do you wait for your child to come to you? Dr. Harvey suggests, we should not wait to talk about racism with children, because segregation is so deep that if we just wait, it will never come up. Let us learn from what 2020 is trying to teach us. Let it be the year of BIG changes towards the future we want for our children. #blacklivesmatter #alohaspeechanddevelopmentcenter See more

As difficult as it is, social distancing has become our new normal, at least for the short term. (great pic from @teachnshare) As we have had to shift gears and learn how to incorporate technology and provide services virtually...we’ve learned how to do things differently, ethically and creatively for our clients, so they can continue to receive the speech therapy they need. Over the past few weeks, we’ve been amazed with the support of our Speech Pathology community.... With the amount of sharing teletherapy ideas, webinars, handouts, we’ve felt isolated but definitely not alone! Our team is here to help children and families during this difficult time through Teletherapy. We can still build on the Speech & Language skills, verbal & non-verbal, through a variety of strategies! Who knows how long this will last. If your feeling apprehensive about Teletherapy, please give us a call and we’d be happy to discuss any questions with you further.
