Changes to the deduction for un-reimbursed employee expenses The Tax Cuts and Jobs Act also suspends all miscellaneous itemized deductions that are subject to the 2 percent of adjusted gross income floor. This change affects un-reimbursed employee expenses such as uniforms, union dues and the deduction for business-related meals, entertainment and travel. Thus, the business standard mileage rate listed in Notice 2018-03, which was issued before the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act passed, cannot be used to claim an itemized deduction for un-reimbursed employee travel expenses in taxable years beginning after Dec. 31, 2017, and before Jan. 1, 2026.

The tax filing season is a busy time for taxpayers, but scammers also stay busy. Taxpayers should be aware of several types of tax scams, but phone scams start to increase during the beginning of tax season and then remain active throughout the remainder of the year. Here’s how this scam generally work: Scammers impersonating the IRS call taxpayers telling them they owe taxes and face arrest if they don’t pay. The scammer may leave a message asking taxpayers to call back to c...lear up a tax matter or face arrest. When taxpayers call back, the scammers often use threatening and hostile language. The thief demands that the taxpayers pay their tax debts with a gift card, other pre-paid cards or a wire transfer. Taxpayers who receive these phone calls should: Hang up the phone immediately. Report the call to TIGTA using their IRS Impersonation Scam Reporting form or by calling 800-366-4484. Report the number to [email protected]; put IRS Phone Scam in the subject line. Taxpayers should remember that the IRS does not: Call taxpayers demanding immediate payment using a specific payment method. Generally, the IRS first mails a bill to the taxpayer. Threaten to have taxpayers arrested for not paying taxes. Demand payment without giving taxpayers an opportunity to question or appeal the amount owed. ......TAX TIP FROM IRS.GOV

Is it Really the IRS Calling? The IRS wants you to understand how and when we contact taxpayers and help you determine whether a contact you may have received is truly from an IRS employee. The IRS initiates most contacts through regular mail delivered by the United States Postal Service.... However, there are special circumstances in which the IRS will call or come to a home or business, such as when a taxpayer has an overdue tax bill, to secure a delinquent tax return or a delinquent employment tax payment, or to tour a business as part of an audit or during criminal investigations. FROM THE IRS WEBSITE Despite a steep drop in tax-related identity theft in recent years, the Internal Revenue Service today warned taxpayers that the scam remains serious enough to earn a spot on the agency’s 2019 Dirty Dozen list of tax scams. Taxpayers should continue to protect their sensitive tax and financial data to help protect against identity thieves, IRS Commissioner Chuck Rettig said. The IRS and the Security Summit partners in the states and the private sector have joined forces to improve our defenses against tax-related identity theft, sharply reducing the number of victims. But we encourage taxpayers to continue to be on the lookout for identity theft schemes, including email phishing attempts and other tax scams.E IRS WEBSITE

SOME THINGS TO BE AWARE OF: Phishing: Taxpayers should be alert to potential fake emails or websites looking to steal personal information. The IRS will never initiate contact with taxpayers via email about a bill or tax refund. Don’t click on one claiming to be from the IRS. Be wary of emails and websites that may be nothing more than scams to steal personal information. (IR-2018-39) Phone Scams: Phone calls from criminals impersonating IRS agents remain an ongoing threat to...Continue reading

Up to one million people a year may lose out on a tax refund simply because they did not file a federal income tax return. Many taxpayers may not file because they didn’t earn enough money to be required to do. However, taxpayers who had federal taxes withheld by their employer may be eligible for a refund of those taxes. Also, even if you aren’t required to file, you may qualify for benefits like the Earned Income Tax Credit. You must file a tax return to get the money.... There is usually no penalty for failure to file, if you are due a refund. But, if you wait too long to file a return or otherwise claim a refund, you risk losing your refund altogether. In most cases, an original return claiming a refund must be filed within three years of its due date for the IRS to issue a refund. Generally, after the three-year window closes, the IRS can neither send a refund for the specific tax year. nor apply any credits, including overpayments of estimated or withholding taxes, to other tax years that are underpaid. ( from the IRS website) So, if you have a 2014 return that needs to get filed, give us a call @ 559-481-8299
