How is racism tied into #plasticpollution? How isn't it? Here's a great article from Sierra Club about why #environmentaljustice is key to dealing with plastic pollution.
Great article on what Tetra Paks are made of and how they're recycled, if they even are.
#VOTE for the change you want to see in the world.

Instead of focusing on what consumers can do to, the Changing Markets Foundation came up with Talking Trash, a multilingual campaign that "highlights the critical need for plastic producers and consumer brands to collect at least 90% of the packaging they put on the market, for either reuse or effective recycling, which in turn will stimulate product redesign, better collection systems and a push towards a circular economy."
Thank you all for helping us to raise over $15,000 during @LongBeachGives!! This year hasn't been easy for anyone so we especially appreciate everyone's encouragement! 2020 has called on the very best Algalita is capable of. As the inspirational epicenter of the #plasticpollution movement, we exist to keep spirits high, even during dark and stormy times. We understand that plastic pollution may not be the world’s highest priority today, but together with our partners, we are committed to keeping the movement’s spark alive. We're so lucky to have so many supporters who believe in us, our work, and our mission!!
Today is the LAST DAY chance to donate to Algalita through Long Beach Gives (https://donate.longbeachgives.org/algalita-marine-research-)! Your contributions go directly to helping us support teachers like Pam and her students! From Pam, a 6th grade English teacher and advisor of the Green Team at Rogers Middle School. She's also had three teams at our annual International Youth Summit! "As a teacher of the Rogers Middle School Green Team in Long Beach, CA, we are fortunate to be minutes from Algalita. For the past five years their support with curricula and student projects has been exceptionally beneficial. Their lessons are hands-on and my students love them. The lessons inspire them to do further research and do what they can to prevent and eliminate ocean plastics."
Tomorrow is officially the launch of Long Beach Gives! Jude is a member of our Youth Advisory Council and our new Social Media Intern! Algalita tries to provide full service support for anyone interested in learning more about, and doing something about, #plasticpollution. We work with students, teachers, researchers, journalists, legislators, and the community! From Daryth, a Science and Marine Biology teacher at Vista View Middle School: "My students, myself, and our oceans have benefited from the awareness and education that Algalita provides. I'm proud to support Algalita through the Long Beach Gives campaign and I hope you will do the same!" https://donate.longbeachgives.org/algalita-marine-research- "As a 12-year-old, I literally gave myself an ulcer worrying about the fate of our planet and the impact a very elite few had ove...r us all, caring about dollars more than anything. I thought I have to wait until I was 18 to have a voice with my vote. "Now, 41 years later, it's devastating the harm that's been done to the planet and all its inhabitants. I kind of live by the mantra, "be the change you wish to see". "With this pandemic, and protests, and riots, I know how out of their control my students feel. I try to instill the fact that they can have a positive impact in every area of their lives, with their families, friends, at school, themselves, and the environment."
From Anchal, one of Algalita's Youth Advisory Council member. "Hi everyone! My name is Anchal Bhaskar (pictured on the right!) Algalita truly is an unique organization. I have been apart of their programs since I was around eight years old, and since day one, have felt like my youth voice has been heard and represented. Now, as I sit on the Youth Advisory Council, I work with Algalita to make our programs the best they can be. I am so lucky to be leading an organization that ...stands for creating a future buoyed by genuine amazing, compassionate leaders that walk the walk. The issue of plastic pollution is complicated one, but the insights, connections, and involvement Algalita allows for creates a safe environment to grow as an activist! I love Algalita for what it has taught me, the connections it has given me, and the ability to voice my passions in environment where I will be supported. Algalita is doing the work that many organizations aspire to do." So that Algalita can continue to do this amazing work, please donate to Algalita on the Algalita website or through the Long Beach Gives Fundraiser (https://donate.longbeachgives.org/algalita-marine-research-)! These donations will help fund our programs for students of all ages and allow Algalita to continue fighting for a cleaner, greener, and brighter future. "
Check out this great short film on circularity from our summer Experienceship student Audrey Sutton! Audrey is a documentary film and journalism student at CSULB, and we we're so lucky to have her join our program.
#longbeachgives is officially next Thursday, September 24th, but early giving starts NOW! To help us continue our work against #plasticpollution, please donate here: https://donate.longbeachgives.org/algalita-marine-research-
