98 bottles of empty milk in the carts 98 bottles of empty milk Take a full one home and bring it back in So many reusable bottles of milk in the carts ... Glass is almost infinitely reusable which makes it such a great way to get your milk. When you buy milk this way, you will pay a small deposit. Bring your rinsed out bottle back and you get your deposit back. The milk companies then clean, sanitize, and reuse these bottle dozens of times each before they are eventually recycled into new bottles. It's a lovely sustainability circle. We hope hundreds of you will give it a try. We can handle it.

Go vote for us and our fellow Marketplace and Park St. vendors for your pick as the top spots in Alameda for Alameda Magazine's annual Best of awards. This is the year where all or our small, locally-owned and operated businesses that make Alameda what it is deserve your support. We know we don't have the customer numbers to unseat a certain German-owned, tiki-themed, mega-corp competitor as Alameda Magazine's readers pick as Best Grocery Store, but let's give it a try.... You can vote for your favorites at alamedamagazine.com/Best-of-Alameda. But hurry you only have until 10 pm on 2/28/21 to get yours in.

The weather is looking to get a little more wintry in the next few days, which means it's the perfect time for some soup. This delicious looking bowl was crafted by our Advocacy Coordinator, Arielle, and features some tomatoes she salvaged from her home harvest. It's important to make the most out of everything you get you know. And making soup is a superb way to get more mileage out of your goods. It’s also healthy, pretty quick to pull off, and uses up a lot of produce in o...ne go. The informal recipe is made with a few pounds of roasted tomatoes, veg paste, roasted garlic, and simmered with some coconut milk & rosemary for herbaceous notes. It’s topped with a drizzle of olive oil, Parmesan cheese, yogurt, and a handful of 5-minute croutons. This is a simple take, but the variety of ways you can put a soup like this together are endless. Soup like this can be simple, fresh, tasty, and low waste. It’s also economical as you can turn excess or imperfect ingredients into a few extra meals. Did you know that we offer imperfect produce on the cheap, often at a steep discount, which is excellent for things like this? Stay tuned for more on that soon. Do you have a favorite recipe for stretching ingredients?

Did you know that the custom of making Jack-O-Lanterns at Halloween is thought to have originated in Ireland in the 19th century? While the carving of vegetables is common in many parts of the world, this particular tradition is rooted in root vegetables. Long before the use of the more festive orange pumpkins we use today, Jack O'Lanterns were originally made using vegetables like turnips, potatoes, and beets. The tradition was to carve out grotesque faces to ward off wander...ing evil spirits. These would work well we think. We do have root vegetables if you want to get heirloom this Halloween, but we also have a small supply of carving pumpkins left too.

Because everything is on the line this November; lives, livelihoods, health care, women's rights, voting rights, the climate crisis, even our very democracy, it bears repeating -- VOTE!!! If you have not yet voted, you have one week left to get your ballots in or solidify your plan to vote on Election Day. If you can go early in person, do it now. If you're returning an absentee ballot, do it now at an official ballot dropbox - go to acvote.org for Alameda County locations. Do not rely on the USPS at this point. You have to vote, but don't stop there. Call, text, email friends, family, neighbors, old roommates, strangers and get them engaged. Sign up to volunteer for outreach opportunities where a final push can be made. But most of all, make a plan and VOTE to make our voices undeniably heard.

Don’t you just love that *clothes-right-out-the-dryer* feeling? Somehow our new line of Eco Dryer Balls from Friendsheep Wool seriously takes it to a whole new level. Made from 100% New Zealand wool, Friendsheep Eco Dryer Balls naturally soften and fluff your laundry by gently tumbling in the dryer. Their movement helps separate your fabrics, allowing heat to better flow between them to prevent wrinkles and static cling.... Friendsheep Eco Dryer Balls can be reused 1000+ times- and unlike most dryer sheets and softeners, they’re completely biodegradable, compostable, and always chemical and plastic free! In each pack you’ll get 6 extra large wool dryer balls in cute animal prints and designs (we currently have koala, panda, pig, sloth, and star decorated ones while supplies last). Try tossing all 6 in with your clothes to reduce drying time by 20%-40%, so they’ll dry faster, cheaper, and more sustainably. Plus they’re packaged in reusable cloth bags, making them a great alternative to disposable laundry products. They’re unscented, hypoallergenic, and baby and pet safe for the whole family. We also love that Friendsheep is a mission driven company: Products are handmade in Nepal, providing hundreds of fair wage jobs mostly to women and people with disabilities; they’re all-natural; cruelty free, and one tree is planted towards permanent forest restoration for every bag of dryer balls sold. All while giving you soft comfy clothes.

You wouldn't know it by looking at it, but this is vegan cheese. You might not even know it after tasting it too. This Farmhouse Cheddar is from Petaluma's @miyokoscreamery and is made with cultured oat milk, other plant-based ingredients, and some old school cheese-making artistry to be one of the most satisfying alternatives around. Miyoko, the woman behind the company, is a former jazz singer from Tokyo turned vegan chef who's passion for animal welfare and compassionate f...ood has fueled her company's growth. By providing vegan products that taste and act like the traditional ones, it makes it so much simpler to adopt a more plant-based diet which has enormous environmental benefits too. We carry a range of Miyoko's goods but wanted to let you know that the Farmhouse Cheddar block, slices, and shreds, as well as the Pepperjack slices and shreds, are now on sale for just $4.19 each. That's down from the regular price of $5.79. The sale runs until the end of the month. Miyoko's makes it easier to go vegan, think you might want to give a try?
