Jan Nevelius Shihan, 7th dan, is a Swedish Aikido teacher who is based in Vanadis Aikido Dojo in Stockholm and teaches seminars internationally. He has been dedicated to his practice of Aikido since the mid 1970’s. Jan Sensei studied for several years in Japan at Aikikai Hombu Dojo in the 1980’s, where he was inspired by the second Doshu Kisshomaru Ueshiba, the elder Osawa Sensei, Yamaguchi Sensei, and Endo Sensei. Upon Jan Sensei’s return to Sweden, he began to teach; he also became a student of Christian Tissier Sensei (Paris), and a close personal student of Endo Sensei. In his seminars, Jan Sensei emphasizes musubi (connection) and soft ukemi. He is also a practitioner of Asian healing arts and a teacher of Qigong. Register: Link in bio - - - INSTRUCTOR INTRO: Hiroshi Ikeda Shihan Ikeda Shihan is the Founder and Chief Instructor of Boulder Aikikai in Boulder, Colorado. He currently holds the rank of 7th Dan through the Aikikai World Headquarters (Hombu Dojo). When circumstances allow, Ikeda Shihan travels extensively as a guest instructor, conducting Aikido seminars at dojos around the world. His teaching emphasizes learning and understanding Aikido with the body, specifically the concept of chushin or how to maintain one’s own center while breaking another’s balance. In addition to his responsibilities as an instructor and ambassador of Aikido, he also founded several companies and organizations, including a proprietary martial arts clothing and equipment design company, Bu Jin Design, and Aikido Bridge, an organization created to bring together teachers and students from different Aikido organizations and backgrounds to share their skills, build friendships, and support the future growth of Aikido. Wishing you and yours a safe, healthy, and Happy New Year! My New Year’s Message (Part 1): I hope you and your loved ones have been safe and healthy during this extraordinarily challenging year.... As you might imagine, my world, like yours probably, was turned upside down in early 2020. Personally It hasn't always been easy, but for the most part, I've been able to appreciate the positive things resulting from our circumstances. The pandemic has allowed me to deepen relationships with my Aikido friends around the world. And it has resulted in the cultivation of new relationships that would not have been possible otherwise. During the pandemic, my classes have been attended by students from the Netherlands, Germany, Taiwan, Japan, France, the USA, United Kingdom, Mexico, Iran, Lebanon, and other countries. Many of them train in different Aikido styles and belong to different affiliations. I treasure this. I've been able to take weekly classes with my sempai in Japan, whom I only was able to train with once a year or so before. The pandemic has also resulted in lots of teaching collaborations between myself and instructors of different affiliations. I welcome more and more collaboration in the future. My Students Pivoting to online training has deepened my students' appreciation of our classes and of Aikido itself. The thank-you's I hear at the end of my Zoom classes are much more fervent than when we trained in person and said our goodbye's in the dojo parking lot. The Lesson This year reminds me of times long ago when my training partners and I trained through discomfort but didn't give up - when snow was blowing through cracks in the wall in the dojo in Yokohama and we couldn't feel our feet; when we trained in temperatures well over 100F in the dojo with no ventilation; and when I had to wake up at 4:35am in order to...
