Introducing CRAFT WORKS, a new lecture series honoring Masters of Craft in Contemporary Architecture and Design. The intent of this series, held 3 times a year, is to introduce to the public the remarkable craftsmen and women whom Aidlin Darling Design has had the pleasure of collaborating with over the years. The focus of these talks will be to explore the process of how the various works were made, the history of the individuals that make them, and the relationship between... the mind, the hand, and one’s tools. To kick off this new lecture series, we are excited to have Nikolas Weinstein as our inaugural speaker. Nikolas Weinstein Studios is a place where art, architecture, and technology come together in the creation of large-scale, site-specific, glass installations. Design Firm: Aidlin Darling Design Multivalent design decisions integrate the client’s diverse criteria into a unified whole. One arrives low onto the site, be...low an existing elevated plateau, and ascends through carved spaces into a series of glass pavilions. These indoor-outdoor living spaces are anchored by rammed earth walls and sheltered under kite-like roofs. The earthen walls ground the building into the land, and provide both physical and psychological shelter. Their elemental materiality imbues warmth and texture to the sensual experience of the home. Contrasting with the massive walls, extensive use of glass obscures the boundary between inside and outside, meeting the owner’s request to feel as though they are living in a garden. Floating roof planes integrate multiple strategies in a singular gesture. Their asymmetric butterfly forms vector interior spaces outward to the landscape. Their folded shape angles photovoltaics toward the sun. Their valleys direct rainwater to cisterns, efficiently draining the roof while visually expressing the act of rainwater collection. Overhangs are calibrated for light, shade, and heat gain management. Their soaring, lightweight forms inspire ones eyes upward to the sky, and juxtapose against the anchoring mass of the walls. A concrete Reading Tower also anchors building to the land, as a counterpoint to the soaring roof. Positioned above the basement wine cellar, the tower rises to a single curved-wood reading chair a private aerie, removed from the bustle of family activity. Light gradates from a dark basement to an airy, light-filled sculptural volume - rising from earth to sky.
