Student Spotlight! Tiffany Naing For the past year, as a McNair Scholar, I have been working in Dr. Mellon’s lab with my graduate mentor, Shanna Lavalle, under the Department of Obstetrics, Gynecology, and Reproductive Sciences. Everyone in the lab is supportive which creates a motivating and positive environment to conduct research at.My project focused on the specific homeodomain transcription factors called VAX1. .I am continuing to do research and took an additional p...osition as the Assistant laboratory technician in the same lab. For research, I am currently conducting similar experiments for SIX3, another homeodomain factor, to determine if it regulates the Kiss1 promotor too. Furthermore, I am testing the hormone treatments for mouse and human Kiss1 promoters. These experiments will help further our understanding of the complex Kiss1 gene regulation and the roles of homeodomain transcription factors within the HPG axis. I would also like to explore more of the reproductive field after I get into graduate school to pursue a Ph.D. and potentially teach in the future. Apply to the McNair at mcnair.ucsd.edu before October 19 and get a chance to publish your research! See more

Student Spotlight Morgan Montoya is a former McNair Scholar. I spearheaded an investigation at Neural Engineering and Translation Labs (NEATLabs) looking at cognitive function in individuals from different racial and ethnic backgrounds & its interactions with resilience. My hope was to communicate the need for investing in personalized mental health interventions focused on resilience and race/ethnic appropriate efforts. I am so grateful for the wonderful experience to lead my own project. By being a McNair scholar that found a wonderful mentor, I was able to be ambitious with the research that interested me. Apply to the McNair program at mcnair.ucsd.edu before October 19 and get a chance to publish your research! Link: https://aep.ucsd.edu/opportuniti/academic-year//index.html

Student Spotlight! Jasmin Hernandez is a former McNair student conducting research in Second Language Acquisition and Bilingualism. This past year, my research focused on the effect of an inhibitory mechanism during language acquisition in adult speakers. We studied this by comparing scores on a verbal fluency task in two groups: a "classroom" group of undergraduate students taking an Italian course at UCSD, and an "immersion" group studying abroad in Italy. Afterwards, we ...compared changes in fluency scores in both English and Italian. We saw a significant increase in Italian fluency scores. This meant that all individuals gained a higher proficiency in Italian over time. There was a decrease (not significant) in English fluency scores, which could be evidence of a previously established inhibition mechanism, but we believe that this is not the same mechanism driving the increase in English proficiency. This study and my experience conducting research was the perfect stepping stone into a career in research. I am currently applying to graduate programs and I hope to continue my research in the field of psycholinguistics. I hope that my research will help us gain a better understanding of bilingualism, and help immigrant and refugee communities throughout the world. Applications for the McNair program are now open! You can apply at mcnair.ucsd.edu with a chance to publish. See more

Student Spotlight! Tiffany Tran was a 2019 2020 McNair Scholar and conducted research in Education Policy and District Spending. I conducted research on school district spending to understand how student support services impact district test scores. Despite being virtual, the experience was wonderful thanks to the McNair program and my mentor. To conduct my research, I interviewed district administrators and analyzed data from online resources. I used a statistical software, R, to run a regression analysis on district specific factors and produce my results. In the future, I hope to continue doing research in this field. She is currently a part of the McNair Challenger Paper Series on campus. Applications for the McNair program are open. You can apply at mcnair.ucsd.edu

Mariana Corrola is this week’s Student Spotlight! Through the URS Chancellor's Research Scholarship for Social Sciences, I was able to dedicate my summer to being a research assistant and a co-investigator for several projects on the Latinx student experience in higher education. I conducted interviews/platicas, coded qualitative data, and presented my findings at the summer research conference. This summer helped set the stage for my preparation and confidence to pursue a doctoral degree in Higher Education Equity. Hear her speak about her research at Somos Pensadoras an Undergraduate Researcher Panel & Platica on September 23rd (3 pm- 5 pm). Register Here: https://forms.gle/JbeJqzkr4GejXxPM9
