Here is the next photo of the elephant painting. I was not happy with the grass so I greyed it out a little. I hope that the photo shows the difference. In Person I like it much better. Now I can start working on the elephant. I have confirmed that the next art workshop will be on Feb 22 at the HG Winery starting at 1pm. If you plan on attending or if you need direction send me an email or comment on this page. Hope to see you there. By the way the cost is only $25 plus any wine that you would like to have.
Here is the next photo in the elephant series. First I decided to put in a sky. I think it works better then what I had. Next I have been working with the grass and trees. I did not care for the color that I had used. I also blended the elephant a little trying to be able to see the form a little better. Painting of animals take a lot of playing around and experimenting. (at least for me) Stay tune for the next next step in this process. I hope you are enjoying watching this painting take form.
Since I have the under painting of the elephant somewhat completed, it is time for the background under paint. Here is what I have so far. Now come putting in the trees and shrubs. Go back to the original photo to see what I am talking about. Don't forget this Sundays is the workshop in Lodi and the subject will be "painting atmosphere with fog. Hope to see you there. This workshop will start at 11 am instead of the 1 pm due to the super bowl.
I am continuing to improve the elephant's shape. I think it is looking pretty good now. Remember this is only the under paint. You must under paint before you can start creating the real shadows and highlights. Now I will start working on the background. I will paint the background over the edges of the elephant so when I start the elephant again, the background will be finished. To do animals, at least for me, is a time consuming process. But just because you can not draw (I cannot draw) does not mean you can not paint. Remember the first step is to use a grid to get the drawing started. When I have some of the background done I will post. Hope you are enjoying this step by step process. If you like the step by step, please tell me.
I noticed that Facebook did not post the photo of the elephant that I was talking about, so here is it is. I am still working on the proportions especially his rear left leg.
I am still trying to get the proportions right on my elephant. It is better but not yet right. You can see that I really can not draw. I have to use a grid and then modify the painting until it looks right.
Here is the first under painting of the elephant. Notice that the proportions are not quite right. Here is where you have to stare at the painting until you can see how to correct the shape. I am not one that can spot what to do immediately. I have to look at it and look at it. Maybe a small nap and more staring. Then I begin to see the legs are thin so I noticed that the front leg come out farther under the chin then I have have. So I start modifying the under paint and that will be the next post. This step of modification may take several attempts before the elephant is in proper proportions. Because I am not a natural drawer is why I can teach anyone to draw if they have the patients. See you on the next post.
I hope you can see the pictures. The first photo is drawing a grid so I can get the elephant in proportion. The second photo is a sketch of the elephant. Noticed that I changed the position of the elephant. I wanted the head more in the center. This is still a rough sketch. The next step is to start shading or scrubbing in the different value of the elephant. What I mean is where it is lighter you use a lighter color and where it is darker paint darker. Remember this is only the under painting and it is not going to look very good at this point but you should be able to see perspective and shapes. I will post the under paited elephant in the next post.
I am very partial to the African elephant. I have painted them twice in my early days of art. Here is the original photo that I am using for my composition. I will post each step that painting will take. Check back tomorrow to see the first step. Drawing the grid.
